Grey’s Anatomy depicts Miranda Bailey as one of the most respected, talented, and professional surgeons at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. However, viewers will find that her character isn’t the admirable matriarchal figure she’s believed to be. The writers of Grey’s Anatomy have created dialogue filled with glorifying adjectives used by Bailey’s coworkers whenever she’s referenced.
Despite their attempt to Inception fans with the idea that Bailey should be held in high regard, her arbitrary rules and values have ultimately unveiled her flawed personality. Though she’s a talented and caring individual, her misguided self-righteous attitude and judgmental tendencies effectively make her an irritating character.
10 She Contributed To Callie’s Struggle With Being Chief Resident
In her class’ race for Chief Resident, Bailey assumed that she was the only one being considered for the position. When the Chief of Surgery chose Callie Torres, she felt betrayed. When Callie assumed her new position none of the residents respected her authority. Typically, Bailey was one of the first surgical superiors to correct her staff whenever they fell out of line.
In this case, Bailey not only chose to undermine her authority by helping the residents ignore her commands, but she also took pleasure in pointing out her mistakes in front of the chief. Though she later offered to help Callie, she took over the position. She made no objections when Callie was fired and happily accepted the position.
9 She’s Selfish & Assumes She Deserves Highly Ranked Positions
Much like Chief Resident, Bailey discovered that there would be an open seat on the board and assumed she would fill the position. When she found out that Christina Yang left her shares to Alex Karev, she immediately asserted that it would be unfair.
She thought that because Richard Webber recommended her, the seat belonged to her automatically. This is one of many instances where Bailey felt entitled to a prestigious position.
8 She Was Unapologetic About Her Public Sexual Escapades In The Hospital
Over the years it became more and more apparent that Bailey didn’t hold herself to the same standard she set for others. She proclaimed that she was a professional and expressed her disapproval of romantic relationships between coworkers. Despite these beliefs, Bailey not only had public fights with her husband in the hospital, but she also had obvious sexual relationships with nurse Eli and her second husband, Ben Warren.
Ironically, she has even forced Meredith to become involved in one of her arguments between herself and Ben during surgery. Bailey often stated she valued professionalism, however whenever it came to her personal relationships, she didn’t exercise the same restraint she demanded from her coworkers.
7 She Ostracized Meredith When She Was Fired
Out of pure drunken jealousy, Alex Karev revealed that Meredith tampered with the Alzheimer’s trial she was conducting with her husband Derek Shepherd. After everyone was notified, Meredith was immediately fired. Instead of showing any sympathy towards Meredith, Bailey was cold to her. She yelled at her for helping a dying patient because she was no longer a doctor there.
This became especially irritating a few seasons later when Bailey was found responsible for infecting her patients with Staph Infection. Though she was under investigation, she tried to help a patient that collapsed in the cafeteria. When she was instructed to step away from the patient, she responded with a look of shock, devastation, and sorrow. She even begged Meredith to tell her how her patients were doing. This is one example of how hypocritical Bailey could be. She wanted acts of sympathy and kindness that she refused to show others.
6 She Criticized Meredith’s Work-Life Balance
Meredith found it difficult to find a work-life balance once she became a mother. In one particular episode, her daughter Zola wasn’t allowed in daycare because she had a fever. As a result, Meredith struggled to care for her while working. At one point, Zola was heard crying in the hallway while Meredith tended to her patient.
Bailey was quick to criticize Meredith and stated that crying babies are the reason people think men can rule the world and women can’t. Bailey should’ve been less critical considering she experienced the same difficulties when she returned to work after her maternity leave. On her first day back, she brought her newborn baby to work and forced Christina Yang to watch her son while she went to surgery.
5 She Wanted Burke & Christina To Be Harshly Punished For Her Insecurities
After Bailey returned from maternity leave she felt she was being “mommy tracked.” She believed that she was being intentionally left out of surgeries because she was now seen as a less serious surgeon. In one instance, Preston Burke was performing a surgery that she had never seen before so she added herself to his service to join his surgery.
Christina Yang erased her name to keep Bailey from discovering that Burke was having difficulties operating. Bailey immediately saw this as a personal attack on her. Later, when Burke and Christina’s secret was discovered, she barged into Webber’s office while he was speaking to the both of them and demanded to know how they would be punished. Her outburst was unwarranted- to demand that a coworker be severely punished because she was feeling insecure was extremely immature and unprofessional.
4 She Fired Her Colleagues & Friends
When Meredith discovered her four-year patient Gabriella Rivera had cancer, she informed her father that Gabriella would need treatment right away. Her father then revealed he didn’t have insurance and couldn’t pay for Gabriella’s care. To treat Gabriella, Meredith committed insurance fraud and replaced Gabriella‘s name with her daughter’s.
When Bailey found out, she not only fired Meredith, but she also fired everyone who knew about it. This included Alex Karev, Andrew DeLuca, and her mentor Richard Webber.
3 On Her First Day As Chief, She Pressured & Bullied Her Staff
On her first day as Chief of Surgery, Bailey was a nightmare. In her first moments as chief, she missed the fact that her staff threw her a surprise party because she was too busy bossing them around. Soon after, she demanded that the head of each surgical department come up with a complete surgical plan to resect a dangerously placed tumor in under four hours.
When her staff admitted to her that it was difficult and they needed more time, she expressed extreme disappointment stating she “expected so much more.” On her first day as chief, Bailey exhausted her staff and made them feel inadequate.
2 She Judged Meredith & Derek When She Discovered They Were Dating
When Bailey found out that Meredith was dating Derek, she was extremely judgmental. Though she continuously stated that she didn’t care about her personal life, she made Meredith’s relationship with Derek an issue even when it wasn’t. Meredith was a bright and talented intern and often earned her place in the operating room.
Even though she was aware of Meredith’s talent, Bailey still warned Derek not to favor her. Whenever she saw them engaged in a private conversation, she would make sure Derek knew she was watching. This caused him to overcompensate and treat Meredith cruelly even though she didn’t deserve it.
1 She Testified Against Meredith At Her Licensing Hearing & Put Her Career In Jeopardy
After firing Meredith, Bailey continued to show intense anger towards her whenever they interacted. When Jo Wilson needed assistance during a solo survey, Meredith was allowed to walk her through it via satellite. When the surgery was complete, Bailey hung up on Meredith, cutting her off while she tried to congratulate Jo.
Moreover, at Meredith’s trial, Bailey initially testified against Meredith. She attempted to confirm Meredith’s recklessness even though she knew Meredith always acted in the best interest of her patients. She even went as far as to devalue the fact that Meredith named her son after her. Whenever she was angry with Meredith, Bailey displayed petty and childish behavior.
