Community stands out from the array of sitcoms available today due to its clever writing and carefully crafted characters. Few shows are as timeless and evergreen as this six-season masterpiece. Along with excellent writing, concepts, and out-of-the-world crossovers, Community thrives on banter, friendship, and romance between the seven main characters (a.k.a the Greendale Seven).
Dan Harmon’s Community is a cult classic, with relatably weird characters. Adopting a sky’s-the-limit approach, Community explores various genres and styles while maintaining the core themes and ideas of the show. All characters go through their individual and collective journeys at the Greendale Community College.
10 Jeff Pretended To Be A Board Certified Spanish Tutor
Jeff Winger was a successful lawyer until he was caught and suspended by the state bar for lying about having a bachelor’s degree. A sarcastic and narcissistic ladies man, Jeff’s plan was to cruise through community college with his friend and psychology professor, Dr. Ian Duncan.
With Abed’s help, Jeff pretends to be a certified Spanish tutor. He starts a niche study group just so he can spend time with Britta, a fairly attractive fellow student. This snowballs into the Greendale Seven coming together.
9 Britta Dropped Out Of High School
Britta Perry grew up in New York City. A politically-sound social empath, Britta tries to project herself as woke and collected but she often comes off as pretentious, misinformed, and hypocritical. However, her questionable life choices often paint her as a negative influence.
A hardcore fan of Radiohead, she decides to drop out of high school as she believes the band would support her decision and be proud of her. After dropping out, she traveled around the world and joined a group called “anarchists, billboard vandals” vandalizing billboards.
8 Shirley Was An Alcoholic
Proud to be an African-American woman, Shirley Bennett is a kind, yet overbearing person with rigid morals. As a devout Christian, she always tried to convince people to follow her way of life. She was cheated on by her husband. Shirley is divorced, raising two boys and barely managing to mask her rage issues. Driven to find solace in alcohol after her marriage ends in divorce, Shirley decides to turn over a new leaf when she sees a Greendale Community College flyer on a yogurt run.
7 Annie Went To Rehab At The Cost Of Family
A goody-two-shoes obsessed with perfection, Annie Edison was a high-strung type-A high school student. A series of events that undermined her potential to succeed, and not being recognized by her crush, led Annie to an Adderall addiction and a breakdown.
After high school, she decided to get help at a rehab against her mother’s wishes. This resulted in her family disowning her. She then lived in a dangerous neighborhood above a shop called “Dildopolis” on her savings.
6 Troy Was Raised As A Jehova’s Witness
A naïve child (who believed everyone is “ten for two years” when he had to repeat 5th grade), Troy Barnes was Riverside High’s star quarterback. He was believed to be destined for great things. En route to university on a football scholarship, he sabotages himself by deliberately injuring himself.
Born December 4, 1989, and raised in Greendale, Colorado, Troy is a true Sagittarius. He was raised as a devout Jehova’s Witness throughout and he never questioned that belief in the slightest.
5 Abed Was Abandoned By His Mother When He Was Six
The offspring of a Palestinian father and a Polish-American mother, Abed Nadir is fluent in English and the native languages of both his parents. It’s believed that Abed is autistic or has Asperger syndrome. He blames himself for his mother leaving him and his father.
The absence of his mother leaves a deep wound on Abed and he dives into American pop culture as an escape. Living at odds with his father, he finds a friend in Troy. Troy matches his quirkiness, and love for roleplay and blanket forts.
4 Pierce Was Never Appreciated By His Father
The oldest member of the study group, Pierce Hawthorne is also the millionaire CEO of Hawthorne Wipes. The source for Troy’s Twitter handle (‘oldwhitemansays’), Pierce is written as a character who holds old-fashioned views. Specifically, he is ‘unknowingly’ sexist and racist, especially towards Shirley and Abed.
Scorned upon by his father, a child actor was hired to play Pierce Hawthorne. Pierce has always wanted his father’s approval. Despite being a 60-something-year-old grown man, he still wishes to please his father and earn his love.
3 Jeff Has Never Been Outside Colorado
Often seen as the person who asserts the most authority in the study group, Jeff Winger is an overconfident person who does not hesitate to manipulate the people around him to get his way. Nonetheless, he is willing to go to great lengths for his friends, even displaying traits like patience and kindness.
As Community ends, emotions run high. In a bonding moment, when Troy is leaving Greendale for good, Jeff tells him that he has never set foot outside of Colorado in his entire life.
2 Troy Believes All Dogs Are Male And All Cats Are Female
Showing one of the most extreme character growths, Troy Barnes goes from an arrogant high school star-footballer to someone who genuinely enjoys interpretive dancing. Embracing his quirky and nerdy side, he has some of the best times with his best friend, Abed. He got a chance to meet his idol, LeVar Burton, but he froze up due to shock.
Troy has loads of unique perspectives and beliefs. For example, he believes that all dogs are males and all cats are females. Troy is also easily distracted by shiny things.
1 The Greendale Seven Emerged From A Riot
In season 3, a contested space in the cafeteria is rented out to a Subway restaurant instead of Shirley Bennett and Pierce Hawthorne and their sandwich shop. Shirley gives a speech in the cafeteria denouncing the Subway restaurant, which gets totaled in the subsequent riot.
Believed to be the instigators of a college-wide riot, Jeff, Britta, Shirley, Abed, Annie, Troy, and Pierce are rusticated. Collectively referred to as the Greendale Seven, they are invited back by Dean Pelton, after the various misunderstandings are cleared.
