Knights of the Old Republic had been rumored to be receiving a remake for quite some time, and it was finally confirmed to be coming from developer Aspyr for Playstation 5 and PC. The game may be a long way from release, but fans of the original are already excited to revisit what many consider to be not only the greatest Star Wars game but one of the greatest video games of all time, period.
As beloved as the original game is, it is not exactly the perfect game that many remember. Some parts of the game are naturally starting to show their age when compared to modern standards. With the game set to be remade from the ground up, there are some issues that the developers should take the opportunity to fix.
10 There Were Many Bugs & Glitches In The Original That Hopefully Don’t Carry Over
The most obvious fix that the remake needs to include is fixing the problems that were present in the original. KOTOR may be one of the greatest games of all time, but it is also a game full of bugs and glitches.
The problems range from mostly harmless exploits that provide infinite experience points to some more serious bugs that can prevent the game from progressing. With the game being completely remade in a new engine, old bugs will likely not be present in the new release. Unfortunately, that means new ones are likely to show up in their place.
9 The Remake Should Restore Cut Content
While Knights of the Old Republic may not be known for cut content like its sequel, there were still some features that were left out of the final game. Fans of the original will be hoping there is some new content included with the remake, and there is no better way to give players something new than to include content that was originally intended to be a part of the game.
The original game was set to include a special alternate Dark Side ending for female players that had romanced Carth. In addition, an entire planet was cut out early in the production of the game. KOTOR originally included the Hutt-controlled volcanic planet of Sleheyron and an additional Star Map questline to go with it.
8 The Minigames Should Be Reworked Into Something Better
One aspect of Knights of the Old Republic that could use a fix would be the minigames that players could participate in throughout their journey. Besides being necessary for a few quests, the minigames were there as a diversion to earn some extra money. However, they just weren’t very entertaining to take part in.
Pazaak was a card game that was enjoyable enough, though it could drag on a little too long, and it wasn’t all that exciting to look at. Likewise, the swoop racing game was not the most enjoyable, being more of a straight drag race than a race against other vehicles like podracing. Improving the fun and replayability of these games, along with maybe adding a few more, should be a priority for the developers working on the remake.
7 The Explorable Areas Should Be Opened Up & Expanded
Knights of the Old Republic will be getting a major upgrade in most areas, and one part of the game that will need some fixing up will be the areas to explore. While the planets KOTOR visited were great to explore when it was originally released, they will need some overhauling to avoid feeling dated.
Beyond the improved graphics, some areas will need to not feel so modular and to prevent players from feeling boxed in. Taking the closed-in areas and opening them up into wider, freely explorable areas would make the game feel new without fundamentally changing too much.
6 The Player Customization Should Be Much More In-Depth
Knights of the Old Republic was one of the earlier games of its type to allow players to customize the appearance of their character. This feature is one that many fans love, allowing them to express their creativity and connect more with their character. However, the character creation in KOTOR is quite limited by today’s standards, consisting only of choice between gender and a few different faces.
The KOTOR remake should overhaul the character creation system to resemble some of the more in-depth systems seen in modern Bioware series like Mass Effect and Dragon Age. At the very least, Aspyr should add more options to increase diversity and inclusiveness in the game.
5 The Combat Needs To Be More Exciting Without Alienating Fans
While it doesn’t necessarily need fixing, the combat from KOTOR could use some updating for a modern audience. The remake is rumored to be more action-oriented than the original, a feature that could be exciting to some players and disappointing to others. The original KOTOR combat wasn’t exactly turn-based, but it did follow Dungeons & Dragons-style rules.
It also allowed pausing to issue orders and switch characters, and this system certainly has its fans. The best approach for Aspyr to take would be something similar to Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Remake, which went from turn-based combat to an action game but allowed players to switch to a more traditional combat system if they preferred. This way, the game could connect better with modern players without alienating fans of the original.
4 AI Needs To Be Improved To Meet Player Expectations
If the combat is going to be overhauled, then it stands to reason that the artificial intelligence of NPCs will be improved to accommodate the changes. However, if the old combat system makes a return, be it as an option or by default, the AI needs to be improved compared to the original.
Much of what is wrong with the AI can be attributed to the age of the game, with enemies being rather stiff and unmoving during combat, along with glitches sometimes giving unfair advantages or disadvantages. The AI of a nearly 20-year-old game just doesn’t hold up by modern standards, and players need to be both challenged by enemy NPCs and aided by teammates.
3 The Light Side/Dark Side System Should Be Overhauled
At first glance, the light side and dark side point system that is featured in KOTOR appears to be just fine. Doing good deeds and helping others raises light points, while doing bad things and being selfish raises dark points. However, Star Wars fans know that being a Jedi or a Sith is much more complicated than that.
It is extremely easy to follow the light side path in the game, and it seems to be the path the game wants players to take. But the Jedi didn’t get involved in certain actions, and sometimes the right thing wasn’t always the Jedi path. Likewise, most actions that award dark side points are extremely petty, and players often must go out of their way to be bad. The dark side should be a temptation that is constantly calling to players and is something the remake should properly address.
2 The Game Needs To Establish If It Is Canon Or Not
Knights of the Old Republic has always existed in a strange area of Star Wars canon, even before the Disney buyout. The series was so far removed from the timeline of the original trilogy that neither referenced each other very much. However, fans have long been wanting Revan to at least be referenced in the modern canon, and he very nearly was before being cut out of an episode of The Clone Wars.
The KOTOR remake has the perfect opportunity to finally establish the game’s place in continuity once and for all. Though fans hope the story won’t be changed too much, the developers will have the chance to remove or rework anything that doesn’t fit with where the series is going under Disney’s leadership.
1 Players Need To Be Able To Wear Revan’s Armor
Something the remake needs to fix that the original really should have already included is to allow players to dress up as Darth Revan. Darth Revan’s outfit is now iconic, and fans would love to be able to dress up as the Sith Lord. In the original game, players could find and wear Revan’s robes near the end of the game.
However, the robes didn’t include the mask that makes the outfit so unique. In addition, the robes were acquired right before the final boss, meaning players didn’t get to wear them long. Aspyr should give fans what they want and allow them to dress the part once players learn the truth about Revan, mask and all.
