Since the moment Maya Lopez was introduced in Hawkeye, long-time comic fans started pondering her future in the MCU and looked at the comics to get an idea of what could be next for this character who is getting her how TV show soon.
While the MCU’s character shares a lot of traits with her comic counterpart, there are also several things where they both differ. Some are small, like her educational background, but some are way bigger, like her possible paternal figure and some of her powers. Whether these traits will cause major modifications to Echo as a character is yet to be seen.
10 She Did Not Go To A School For Special Needs
In the comics, once her father dies, Maya goes to live with Wilson Fisk, who raises her as a daughter and enrolls her in a special needs school, since she is deaf like Clint Barton is. However, after her teachers notice she is smarter than average, Maya transferred to a school for geniuses.
So far in the TV show, fans have seen very little about Echo’s life, but one of the flashbacks from her childhood shows her asking her father why she cannot attend a specialized school for deaf people. Her father apologizes for not being able to afford it and then explains to her daughter that she is better off in a regular school because eventually, she will join a society that will not accommodate her disability.
9 Daredevil Is Not Her Main Enemy
Since she was raised by the crimelord, Kingpin, Maya grew up thinking Daredevil had murdered her father and so she became of her biggest enemies, while, ironically, developing a romantic relationship with Matt Murdock, Daredevil’s secret identity. It was after learning the truth that Echo tried to murder Kingpin and then became a superhero.
Since Daredevil is not in any of the Disney+ Marvel series, he is not Echo’s main adversary. In the show, she believes Clint Barton’s Ronin murdered her father and so does Clint himself.
8 She Is The Leader Of The Tracksuit Mafia
So far in the series, fans can see Echo as the head of the Tracksuit Mafia, and even though there is clearly a bigger fish in charge of the organization, they all seem to respond to her. It is obvious that she is in charge and they all respect her.
In the comics, The Tracksuit Mafia also serves as minions for the main villain in Hawkeye, but that isn’t Echo. Some rumors indicate Kingpin will be joining the series, which would explain why Echo, who is Wilson Fisk’s daughter, is currently in charge of the group.
7 Her Lip-Reading Skills Are Not As Great
Since she was born deaf, but with an above-average intellect, Maya Lopez soon learned to read lips in order to communicate with the people around her. In the comic books, she is seen reading lips from a further distance than normal, only using the corner of her eye, or even while talking with people who wear thin masks.
While Echo in Hawkeye also communicates mostly through lip-reading, she is not as great at doing it as she is on the pages. In fact, when she first meets Kate, the girl speaks so fast that Maya is unable to follow, which makes her angry.
6 She Is Not A Polyglot (So Far)
One of the main consequences of Echo’s photographic reflexes is that she can become a prolific athlete or artist in a matter of seconds. This also works great when it comes to learning new languages: all she needs to do is see them written or spoken one time to learn them.
Maya Lopez in Hawkeye has not shown this as one of her main abilities, but since we haven’t spent much time with her, it may be a matter of time before she uses this skill.
5 Her Time As The Phoenix Host Seems To Be Far Off
During Enter The Phoenix, Echo is selected as one of the contestants of the tournament to become the new host for the Phoenix Force. And in fact, she wins after showing great prowess and resilience in a battle against Namor. After this, she takes the mantle of Thunderbird.
In the MCU, the Phoenix Force is not even close to appearing, as far as the audience knows, and Echo is still playing the part of a villain of the story. However, she is getting her own TV show soon, which opens the possibility for her arc as Thunderbird to be explored.
4 She Has A New Ally And Friend
Kazimierz “Kazi” Kazimierczak is a boy that moved to America after his circus family died in an armed conflict. The trauma resulting from his life during the war turned him into a sociopathic mercenary called The Clown. He is known to have murdered Clint’s neighbor on his quest to murder Barton himself.
In the TV series, Kazi is Echo’s childhood friend and second in command. He is also the only person that can calm Echo down when she is upset. However, in the comic books, they do not know each other; they belong to very different narratives that the MCU connected and merged for this adaptation.
3 Her Connection To Kate Bishop
Since there are thousands of Marvel characters coexisting in the comics, some of them have never met. This is pretty much what happens with Kate Bishop and Maya Lopez. Although they are connected through their respective relationships with Clint Barton (Kate is his apprentice and then-teammate, and Echo is his teammate and then-lover), that is pretty much it.
On the other hand, in Hawkeye, their lives are directly connected as the hero and the apparent villain of the plot. So far they have an antagonistic relationship, but considering Maya’s story in the comics, it is very likely that she will become a hero at some point in the show.
2 She Is Not The First Ronin
After learning that Kingpin murdered her father and that everything she knew was a lie, Maya Lopez found comfort with The Chief, an old friend of her father who sent her on a soul-searching trip. She then returned to New York as Ronin and became a good-doer.
In the MCU, Maya is not the first Ronin, Clint Barton is. Clint used this identity as a way to deal with his grief after the Blip. So far nothing indicates that Maya will become the new Ronin by the end of the show, but the possibility and the means for it are there.
1 Kingpin Is Not Her Step-Father, Or Is He?
Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin, is a central character in Maya’s origin story as a villain and a superhero. After murdering her father, he raises her to believe he was murdered by Daredevil and then he uses her to get closer to Matt Murdock and learn about Daredevil’s weakness. Once Maya finds out the truth, she leaves his side and joins other heroes against the forces of evil.
So far, the TV series introduced Maya’s uncle, a mysterious character wearing a suit who becomes her parental figure. But nothing on the screen signals that this is Wilson Fisk. However, since Kevin Feige has announced his plan to keep a part of Netflix Daredevil’s cast for the MCU, fans are hopeful.
