The greater universe at large has always been a focus for early Marvel comics. From the adventures of the Fantastic Four to wanderings of the Silver Surfer, writers have always made it their mission to expand and populate the universe with a variety of races and worlds that can make even the world-ending troubles of New York, and even the Earth itself seems rather small in comparison.
Ancient deities and gods pass through lightyears as if it were a brief walk, galactic titans swallow worlds in an instance, and empires roam the stars in search of a greater purpose. After nearly a century of comics, Marvel’s cosmic collective is truly an expansive work of art.
10 Skrulls – Espionage Experts
Though they do not bear any god-like powers, the Skrull empire is feared throughout the galaxy. With their incredible ability to shapeshift to take any form they wish, their espionage escapades make them the perfect invasion force.
This is shown through the Secret Invasion storyline where key figures on Earth were replaced with Skrull sleeper agents. Their advanced technology has allowed them to achieve interstellar travel and remarkable genetic experimentation. With this, they can copy powers and even create beings such as the Super Skrull.
9 Kree – The Greatest Imperial Force
An advanced empire that controls large sections of the galaxy with superior technology and physiology. Kree soldiers are stronger and faster than regular humans. They have been around for centuries and are responsible for the domination and conquering of countless alien races with an iron fist. Their science is so advanced by human standards (excluding agencies such as S.H.I.E.L.D & individuals like Tony Stark) that it could be viewed as magic. Their military and imperial mindset make them a great danger to any world that is without protectors.
8 Flerken – Looks Like A Cat, Is Not A Cat
Though they may look like an ordinary cat from Earth, Flerkens is actually an incredibly dangerous and feared lifeform. Their most dangerous aspect is the unrelenting horde of fangs and tendrils that can sprout from its mouth. Seemingly able to consume any species in a matter of moments, they are a species that most space-faring races would avoid fighting. Their bodies also contain a miniature pocket dimension within the mouth, allowing them to store almost anything for safekeeping. In some realities, their claws can be toxic to humans.
7 Flora Colossi – I Am Groot
Our prime example of the Flora Colossi comes in the form of Groot, the gentle giant of the Guardians of the Galaxy. A race of sentient living trees, the Flora Colossi are an ancient species that continuously pass down the knowledge of their forebearers to the younger generation. Their unique physiology makes them incredibly dense. Alongside this, they have complete control over their body’s shape and can produce vines and branches that they then can control. It also seems that once their body is destroyed, they can live again through a planted seed.
6 Asgardians – Aliens That Seem Like Gods
The alien species that would later become the foundation for Norse Mythology, the Asgardian people possess technology so advanced that it was assumed to be magic by the ancient people of Earth. Figures such as Thor, Odin, and Loki possess powerful abilities granted to them either through artifacts such as the hammer Mjolnir, or the study of ancient magic.
With the incredible interstellar network of the Bifrost, they can reach any world within their domain in an instant. Their impressive weaponry and mystic knowledge make them a force not many empires could battle.
5 Poppupian (Impossible Man) – Can Do Anything He Wants
Coming from the planet of Poppup, the beings known as the Poppupians adapted to their harsh environment by evolving to gain complete control over their molecular structure. They seem to be able to take any form they can imagine, even forms larger or smaller than themselves. It is also shown that they are incredibly difficult to kill, as the Poppupian who became known as the Impossible Man, has died twice in the Marvel continuity, and has returned due to the strict genetic coding of the Poppupian race, which forces the hivemind to retain the species collective intellect. While they have no offensive abilities, their shape-changing can grant them added benefits depending on the form they take.
4 The Watchers – Always Watching, Never Interacting
Despite having vast cosmic powers that allow them to realize their thoughts, the beings only known as The Watchers took a vow to merely observe the universe and record their findings. Their presence didn’t become known until the Watcher known as Uatu came to Earth to warn the Fantastic Four on the coming of Galactus. Though they have no empire, army, or weapons, the Watchers’ cosmic power allows them to supersede most powers in the galaxy with relative ease. However, they are unlikely to ever chase a threat but only act in self-defense.
3 The Eternals – The Final Evolution Of Humans
Created by the Celestials as an evolved form of the Human race, the Eternals reflect their progenitor’s appearance. However, they bear a variety of powers that grant them the title of Homo Immortalis. With strength, speed, invulnerability, and immortality, the Eternals are a powerful force. Eternals such as the Earth hero Hyperion also have abilities such as flight and atomic vision. As a unified force, anything beneath the title of God would be powerless against them. Perhaps even the forces of Asgard and the Royal Guard of the Shi’ar empire would struggle against them as well.
2 The Celestials – Working Behind The Scenes Since The Dawn Of Time
Cosmic constructs whose experiments heavily influenced the development of the Human race, the Celestials created branches of the Human genome such as the Mutant X-Gene which would later go on to create the Mutant race on Earth and characters such as the X-Men and Magneto. They existed before the multiverse and fighting wars within the first iterations of creation, the Celestials dwarf everything fans of the MCU have seen thus far.
They are a race so incredibly massive that small decisions in a moment of their time, had drastic ramifications for the development of small worlds such as Earth.
1 The Beyonders – Beyond Even Gods
Fans first met the concept of a Beyonder through the primary force behind the realm of Battleworld from Marvel’s Secret Wars back in 1984. It was later revealed that the Beyonder came from a race of Beyonders who all share the same abilities. Their monumental cosmic power grants them a variety of powers. They can travel the multiverse, release vast quantities of cosmic energy and even create entire planets from almost nothing. They have the power to defeat beings of cosmic proportions and cosmic-level heroes with ease.
