10 Standalone Films That Would Have Gotten Sequels If They Came Out Today

[ad_1]

Modern audiences seem to have a love/hate relationship when it comes to sequels. Everyone complains about the overabundance of sequels plaguing cinemas and streaming services, and yet, audiences still go see them.

Over the last few decades, studios have come to accept that sequels tend to draw in crowds and bring in profits. If studios had learned this sooner, there’s no doubt that plenty of classic solo films would have gotten follow-ups.

10 It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World Could Easily Rely on Star Power Alone

it's a mad mad mad mad world cast photo

The plot of It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World is fairly simple: a group of strangers learns where a criminal buried his stolen loot and race against each other to reach it first. Of course, these strangers and the rest of the cast are all played by Hollywood elites like Milton Berle, Buddy Hacket, and Mickey Rooney.

They get into wacky hijinks, slapstick comedy, and high-speed, practical car chases. If The Fast and the Furious series has proven anything, it’s that star-studded casts and car chases mean big bucks. All they got to do is stick to the formula and audiences will keep on coming back.

9 Killer Klowns From Outer Space Would Be The Next Sharknado

Killer Klowns From Outer Space 1 Cropped

There’s no denying that Killer Klowns From Outer Space is a ridiculous, ludicrous premise that shouldn’t work. Clown-like aliens descend upon a small town, wreak havoc, and kidnap civilians who get cocooned in cotton candy to be eaten later.

Its weirdness is what made it a cult classic, and if Sharknado can get five sequels, why not Killer Klowns? There are clown cars full of potential with this franchise to have the clowns get even zanier and deadlier with their kills. At the moment, all sequels are currently trapped in development hell and show no sign of escaping.

8 A Clockwork Orange Could Have Been the Next Joker

Alex DeLarge in A Clockwork Orange

Anyone who knows about A Clockwork Orange is aware that it is a brutal film with controversial content. Many would assume that it would be too risky to make a sequel to a film involving a British gang leader, Alex DeLarge, that takes joy in assaulting people.

However, films like Cruella and Joker have shown that films starring villainous, controversial leads can be highly successful. A sequel would also allow audiences to further explore the dystopian future Alex calls home.

7 Beauty & the Beast Would Have Gotten the Frozen Treatment

Beauty and the Beast Disney

A tale as old as time, Beauty and the Beast was a colossal hit for Disney and the first animated film to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. With its breath-taking animation and iconic songs, one could argue that it was as impactful as Frozen.

Considering Frozen and every other movie in the Disney Renaissance got a sequel, it stands to reason that Beauty and the Beast would have done the same. Most likely they would find a way to turn Prince Adam back into a beast and have him and Belle go off on another magical adventure. If they can do it for Tangled, they could do it for Belle and the Beast.

6 Monty Python & the Holy Grail Would Be A Viral Sensation

Consider for a moment how quickly studios try to monopolize viral sensations. Annoying Orange, Fred, and Baby Shark got their own TV series, Grumpy Cat got a holiday movie, and Frozen 2 wouldn’t have existed if “Let It Go” wasn’t being played or parodied all over the internet.

What would happen if Monty Python and the Holy Grail was released today? It would trend like crazy with people incessantly quoting the hilarious lines, and studios would realize they could rake in a fortune with a sequel.

5 The Iron Giant Could Have Been As Big As The Incredibles

Long before Brad Bird introduced the world to The Incredibles, he directed a little cult classic known as The Iron Giant. The story of a young boy befriending a colossal, giant robot and hiding him from the government. Upon its initial release, it flopped at the box office due to the release of Tarzan, but has garnered a following.

Warner Bros. clearly noticed and cashed in on this by featuring the titular titan in Ready Player One and Space Jam: A New Legacy. If they knew that it would become a beloved classic, Warner Bros. would have definitely sprung for a sequel or two.

4 Nightmare Before Christmas Would Get A Sequel For the Sake of Merchandising

Today, everyone knows The Nightmare Before Christmas as a holiday classic and a profitable piece of pop culture. Years after the film was released, a surge of merchandise filled retail stores with the likenesses of Jack Skellington, Sally, and Oogie Boogie that the public ate up.

If Disney knew how successful the film was going to be, they would have given in to any of Tim Burton’s or Henry Selick’s demands if it meant getting a sequel. The other unexplored holiday worlds offered a plethora of potential for story ideas and new characters to profit off of. Not to mention they could have a second mixed holiday movie to air reruns of every year.

3 The Sixth Sense Could Have Followed Cole Into Adulthood

Haley Joel Osment and Bruce Willis in The Sixth Sense

M. Night Shyamalan gets teased a lot for his twist endings, but part of the reason he is a renowned director is because of his first hit film, The Sixth Sense, and its twist. It became an astounding hit and turned him into a household name. Surprisingly, a follow-up wasn’t immediately ordered to capitalize on the film’s popularity.

The focus could have shifted to Cole as he used his powers to help people and possibly deal with supernatural threats. If Unbreakable could be spun into a trilogy, The Sixth Sense could have received one too.

2 Fight Club Could Have Continued the Story In Films Instead of In Comics

Brad Pitt in Fight Club

It’s been 22 years since Fight Club came out and people continue to break the first rule by talking about this daring film. It was one of the most controversial films of the ’90s and guaranteed to create controversy if it came out today, with Tyler Durden’s teachings.

Its ending would surely demand a sequel from audiences and studios would be more willing to answer that call. It shouldn’t be too hard considering there are already comics that serve as sequels continuing the story of the unnamed narrator. The main reason they can’t do it now is that too much time has passed and actors are older.

1 There’s Something About Mary Could Keep the Hijinks Coming

Most romantic comedies receive sequels, and There’s Something About Mary could easily receive one today. Especially considering it nearly made twenty times its budget during the initial release. The story could have continued to explore Ted and Mary’s relationship while dealing with her growing number of admirers.

Alternatively, the roles could be reversed and Ted becomes the one with multiple admirers. Either way, fans of the original would definitely go see the sequel if nothing else but to see if it is on par with the first film.
