Creating compelling, likable characters is one of the most important tasks in making a story and it can be tricky to make a character that’s both. Compelling characters may not be likable and vice versa, or sometimes a likable character hits a character arc that damages their likability.
Other characters may start off unlikable and waver between their bad habits and doing good deeds that make them seem redeemable. Shonen anime need robust casts of characters that will keep audiences engaged, so it’s especially important for them to have memorable characters. Sometimes, a character’s tarnished likability is what becomes most memorable.
10 Vegeta Has His Ups & Downs But Remains Hard To Like (Dragon Ball Z)
It’s possible that Vegeta’s unlikability is inextricably tied to his past as a villain in Dragon Ball Z. Despite being welcomed by Goku as a friend and rival, Vegeta still manages to rub fans the wrong way when he acts up. Vegeta’s excessive pride is the major source of contention since his pride compels him to do things that tarnish his character. He’s had some redeeming moments come up here and there, but for the most part, Vegeta’s toxic ego keeps him from being super likable.
9 Sasuke Showed Some Early Growth But Stumbled Along The Way (Naruto)
Starting as the obligatory rival character, Sasuke Uchiha was nonetheless a fan-favorite early on in Naruto. His standoffish, cold attitude made him mysterious and compelling while his fighting skill made him impressive. But over time, Sasuke’s arrogance and superiority complex started grating on fans’ nerves. The way he treats Sakura Haruno has been especially poorly received, even if Sakura isn’t very likable herself. Sasuke’s subsequent betrayal of the Hidden Leaf Village after he joined forces with Orochimaru is one of the first major instances that tarnished his likability.
8 Usopp’s Lying & Cowardice Can Be A Turn-Off For Fans (One Piece)
All characters should have some kind of flaw, but when those flaws are obnoxious, it can make the character hard to like. One Piece‘s Usopp easily falls into this category. Even though Usopp has achieved some impressive things over the series, he’s also messed up just as much, making it hard to find him completely redeemable.
Usopp’s penchant to boast and tell lies while being an incorrigible scaredy-cat is a big part of what damaged his likability and it persists as an unlikable trait.
7 Todo Is Confrontational In A Selfish-Centered, Irritating Way (Jujutsu Kaisen)
Jujutsu Kaisen‘s Aoi Todo doesn’t want to live a boring life. His litmus test for potential comrades is to ask them what kind of woman they like. If they answer with a “boring” response, Todo apparently finds it appropriate to fight them. While this is a quirky, unique trait for a shonen hero, it’s nevertheless irritating in its execution. Todo is arrogant to the point of disrespecting anyone who doesn’t satisfy his definition of interesting, which can get old pretty fast. He’s still an exciting character, just hard to like.
6 Eren’s Turn To Extremism Sent Waves Through The Fanbase (Attack On Titan)
While he’s always had a strong personality and a desire to eradicate all Titans, Eren Jaeger’s personality takes an extreme turn after Attack on Titan‘s most recent time skip. Believing that only extreme action can solve the conflict between Marleyans and Eldians, Eren takes it upon himself to establish the Jagerists, a group loyal to his cause. He betrays the comrades he’s made in the Scout Regiment, including Armin Arlert and Mikasa Ackerman, an action that enraged a good amount of Attack on Titan fans.
5 Korra Needed To Mature Before She Could Be Likable (The Legend Of Korra)
At the beginning of the Legend of Korra, Korra’s likability is held in a delicate balance. She’s definitely a spunky, unique character that audiences want to like, but her crude arrogance ultimately proved to be her downfall. Considering that Korra’s entire character arc revolves around her ability to grow and change, it’s not surprising that her likability was questionable from the start. Fans who are able to empathize enough to see past Korra’s shortcomings find her to be a compelling character, but maybe not likable.
4 Bakugo’s Explosive Temper Frequently Works Against Him (My Hero Academia)
Characters who display fiery tempers often have a polarizing effect on the fanbase, with fans either loving or hating them. My Hero Academia‘s Katsuki Bakugo definitely fits this mold, since he’s had mixed reviews from fans since the beginning.
While he’s undoubtedly popular, “likable” might not be as applicable. Some may enjoy Bakugo’s passionate rage, but others become annoyed by Bakugo’s arrogance and superiority complex. There’s also the fact that he’s shouting in nearly every one of his scenes, which gets really annoying really fast, further damaging his likability.
3 Light Quickly Lost Audience Sympathy After His God Complex (Death Note)
While Light Yagami first appears as a sympathetic advocate for justice at the beginning of Death Note, he is quickly corrupted by the Death Note’s power and falls into a god complex. Light is meant to be an unparalleled genius, an assumption that feeds his enormous ego and helps establish his complex. Seeing Light devolve into a deranged criminal instead of a benevolent god is part of the fun in Death Note, but it doesn’t make him a very likable character. His eventual demise was welcomed by many.
2 Zenitsu’s Cocky, Crybaby Attitude Can Be Amusing Or Tiring (Demon Slayer)
Yet another polarizing character, Demon Slayer‘s Zenitsu Agatsuma can be an incredibly hard character to like. While it’s amusing to watch him have an existential crisis amongst his loudly professed fears, his antics can become tiring, especially since he yells a lot. His tendency to look down on others is another part of Zenitsu’s personality that can be hard to like, but at least his cockiness is usually displayed in a humorous manner. He’s also somewhat of a lecher with women, which can be a turn-off for some.
1 Joseph Joestar’s Tryst Is In-Character But Definitely Unlikable (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure covers many different plots, but Joseph Joestar has appeared in three different installments, speaking to his popularity as a character. Joseph is popular for his underhanded, tricky personality that attempts to outsmart rather than overpower, but his affair with Josuke Higashikata’s mother is a stain on his history that some have had trouble accepting. Although some may think that Joseph would never cheat, in reality, cheating is quite in line with his personality. He probably did it on accident and panicked after the fact.
