In the realm of anime, many heroes and protagonists are selfless and generous characters, such as the compassionate Tohru Honda or the heroic Izuku Midoriya. Such characters are easy to root for since nearly everyone recognizes the virtue of selflessness, but some anime characters were late getting the memo.
It’s a given that many anime villains and antagonists are greedy and self-absorbed, but even some heroes or supporting characters tend to put themselves first, and might even shun the people who want to be their friends. Over time, though, these self-centered anime characters learned the true value of friendship and began to fight for the sake of others. Who are they?
10 Laxus Dreyar Decided Against His Weeding-Out Plan (Fairy Tail)
Laxus Dreyar, the lightning dragon slayer, is a curious case. In his boyhood, he really did value the power of friendship and family, but partway through the story, he became obsessed with power and actually wanted to weed out the Fairy Tail guild’s weaker members.
At the time, friendship meant little to him outside his Thunder God Tribe squad. After his defeat and exile, however, Laxus re-assessed his relationship with the guild, and he returned as a truly selfless and loyal member who puts others first. That’s the Fairy Tail way.
9 Sasuke Uchiha Learned To Have Friends, & Not Just Rivals (Naruto)
In the early arcs of this action anime, Sasuke Uchiha was a cooperative member of Team Seven, but only for the sake of growing stronger to face Itachi Uchiha later on. He abandoned the team to consort with Orochimaru the rogue shinobi, and was truly obsessed with power at all costs. He cared nothing for his former friends.
Very gradually, over time, Sasuke returned to Naruto’s side and learned to fight alongside Naruto and Sakura one more time to face the final villains, such as Kaguya Otsutsuki. Now, in Boruto, Sasuke is a true friend and ally, though he’s still a bit distant at times.
8 Mary Saotome Needs Friends, Not Just Cunning (Kakegurui)
Mary Saotome is Yumeko Jabami’s somewhat friendly rival, and she has learned to become a true team player during high-stakes games of chance. At first, she tried to rise to the top of Hyakkou Academy on her own, but she couldn’t pull it off. She needs Yumeko and vice versa.
Mary still wants to take Yumeko down someday, but for now, she and Yumeko are trusting teammates, and she can also get along with Ryota Suzui if it comes to that. Mary is ready to challenge the brutal student council with her allies in tow.
7 Lucy/Nyu Finally Found A True Friend In Kouta (Elfen Lied)
Lucy is not an ordinary human girl. She is a Diclonius, a supernaturally gifted humanoid with short horns and the power to control invisible “vector” arms to grab or tear objects remotely. Lucy was experimented upon in a secret lab before breaking free into the big wide world beyond.
No part of Lucy’s life is easy, even when she assumes her gentler alternate persona Nyu, but she did finally make friends with a kind boy named Kouta, who was there with her as she finally died. Until then, Lucy had been concerned only with her own survival, often at the cost of other people’s lives.
6 Guts The Mercenary Isn’t Always A Lone Wolf (Berserk)
Guts the mercenary was rarely completely alone since he grew up with mercenary bands and had allies. But he never had friends, and he fought only for money and his own survival. That changed at last when he joined the Band of the Hawk, led by the charismatic Griffith.
Guts and Griffith were friends and allies during the Golden Age arc, and Guts eventually befriended and fell in love with Casca, a fellow Hawk mercenary. Now Guts fights for her sake, not just his own, and it empowers him like never before.
5 Touka Kirishima Became Protective Of Ken Before Long (Tokyo Ghoul)
Touka Kirishima used to look out for her little brother Ayato, but they eventually went their own separate ways, and Touka soon cared only for herself. All that changed when she met Ken Kaneki because, while at first she rejected him, she soon became his friend, mentor, and protector.
Not only that, but Touka also became a big sister figure to the young ghoul Hinami, who had recently lost her mother. Touka will fight hard for Ken’s and Hinami’s sake, and that’s what any good-hearted ghoul would do. Not all ghouls are monsters, after all, regardless of what Kureo Mado says about them.
4 Kyo Sohma Eventually Learned To Open His Heart (Fruits Basket)
Kyo Sohma is a classic male tsundere character, and he has many tragic reasons to be so clammed up like that. He bears the stigma of having the cat spirit in him, and he is bitterly envious of the seemingly perfect Yuki Sohma. He also endured endless verbal and emotional abuse from his parents, not to mention Akito.
All this made Kyo highly defensive and closed off to most people, only opening up for his martial arts teacher, Kazuma. When he met Tohru Honda, though, Kyo changed his tune, and he confronted Akito not just for his own sake, but for Tohru’s. He won’t let anyone make Tohru cry if he can help it.
3 Yasutora “Chad” Sado Learned To Use His Strength For Others (Bleach)
For years on end, a young Chad was a bitter loner, since he felt misunderstood and alone while living with his grandfather in Mexico, and he had few other family members to look after him. Chad took out his anger on others, venting his frustration by fighting anyone who looked at him wrong. So, his grandfather stepped in.
Chad’s grandfather, Oscar, taught Chad the true meaning of strength: to resolutely stand up to bullies and shield the weak without hitting back. Chad became a pacifist, and he made his first real friend when Ichigo later saved him from bullies in Japan. Now, Chad uses his strength to defend others, never for his own sake.
2 Genos Now Puts Hero Work Ahead Of Revenge (One-Punch Man)
Genos lost his entire hometown to a rampaging cyborg, and he swore revenge. He became a cyborg himself and single-mindedly pursued revenge, and he had no allies or friends at all. Eventually, though, he crossed paths with the mighty Saitama and found his true mentor at last.
Genos instantly became Saitama’s loyal student and friend, and he will go to great lengths to defend Saitama’s honor. He’s also become a professional hero who will risk his very life for the sake of countless civilians everywhere. Finally, he has more to fight for than revenge.
1 Inosuke Learned To Become A Team Player (Demon Slayer)
Inosuke Hashibira was raised by wild animals, ever since his mother abandoned him as an infant. Inosuke thus grew up as an aggressive but talented fighter who is deeply attuned to his instincts, and he even invented the Beast Breathing style for himself. He doesn’t play well with others, though.
Inosuke is definitely anti-demon, but he is only recently learning to cooperate with fellow demon slayers, namely Tanjiro Kamado and Zenitsu Agatsuma. He’s still rough around the edges, but he has finally learned to become a reliable team player, especially during the events of the Mugen Train movie.
