Josei Anime, translated as “woman,” is an anime genre directed towards adult women, typically in their mid-twenties to thirties. The titles in this genre tend to be mature and focus on the realities of romance or the work-life balance that many other genres tend to brush over or forget altogether.

Yuri On Ice tells the story of Yuri Katsuki, an ice skater with big dreams to win the gold. However, during the first episode, “Easy as Pirozhki!! The Grand Prix Final Of Tears,” Yuri plummets to the bottom of the ranking for his program and manages to slip away to the bathroom to call his mother.
The resulting breakdown is something all fans can relate to, as almost everyone knows the feelings of defeat and the pain that comes with recognizing one’s failures.
9 Tomie: The Unfortunate Fate Of Tomie’s Victims
Tomie is about a beautiful woman named Tomie Kawakami and her succubus-like powers that cause any man she meets to fall profoundly in love with her. As a result, men kill each other for an ounce of her affection or go crazy with the jealous rages she causes. Eventually, many of her victims go mad and kill Tomie herself, only for her to regenerate into many forms to further spread the anguish. What is so heartbreaking is that many of the victims have no end to the madness once she is in their lives.
8 Black Butler: Book Of Murder: Sebastian’s Death
In this Black Butler special, Ciel and his demon butler Sebastian are trying to find the murderer of Phantomhive Manor. But, unfortunately, it is revealed that Sebastian has fallen victim to a brutal end.
As Ciel pounds his fists on his butler’s body, begging him to wake up and stop pretending, many fans began to realize how much Ciel cares for his butler as his other servants have to drag him away to grieve in private.
7 Black Butler: Book Of Circus: Doll Finds Out The Betrayal
In the second season of Black Butler, Ciel and Sebastian find themselves joining a circus in which children are disappearing. Throughout the season, it is discovered that these children are being brainwashed and killed in brutal manners for circus goers’ entertainment by the circus’ performers to appease their master. Unfortunately, their master is obsessed with Ciel and his late father. Once Ciel discovers this, he orders the death of all involved. As the circus burns, Doll, the girl responsible for training Ciel, sees her “family” slaughtered. In her rage, she attacks Ciel but soon meets death herself.
6 Fruits Basket: Kyo Believes He Killed Kyoko Honda
Fruits Basket tells how Tohru Honda, an ordinary girl, comes to live with the Sohma family with a secret; anytime they contact the opposite sex, they turn into the zodiac animals. Kyo Sohma is the cat, ostracized and hated since birth. He meets Kyoko Honda, and they become friends. When Tohru is lost, Kyo finds her, only to see his rival and cousin Yuki saved her.
This angers him, and he runs away, never to see Kyoko again. Later, he sees her about to be hit by a car. Unable to save her without risking his secret, Kyoko, hit by the vehicle, bleeds to death but not before saying she will never forgive Kyo, causing him to run away once more in life with that guilt throughout the series.
5 Loveless: Ritsuka Is Abused By His Mother
Loveless is about twelve-year-old Aoyagi Ritsuka, left with his abusive mother after his older brother Seimei is suddenly killed in a freak fire at school. The accident changes Ritsuka as he suddenly forgets all his memories of that day and seems to develop a second personality. Because of this drastic change, his mother beats him, as she believes he is no longer her child but an imposter who stole his body. The abuse is especially poignant because it is not Ritsuka’s fault, even as his mother believes it.
4 Orange: Kakeru Naruse’s Suicide
Orange tells the story of Naho Takamiya, a high school student who receives a letter from herself ten years into the future telling her to prevent her biggest regrets involving new transfer student Kakeru Naruse. From the notes, it is soon revealed that Kakeru is dead by suicide in the future due to his loneliness over his mother’s death. Taking a bike ride, Kakeru drives out in the middle of the road and is hit by a passing truck, dying before Naho can reveal her love for him.
3 Talentless Nana: Michiru’s Death
Talentless Nana takes place in the future. Monsters have begun to appear, and so have children with supernatural powers known as talents to help prepare them for the battles against the monsters. Before they can fight, they are sent to school. It is here that Nana, the main character, meets Michiru, who helps her let go of her guilt and move on towards a beautiful friendship. When Nana finds out that a killer is going after Michiru, she takes several stab wounds to save her. However, Michiru uses her powers to revive Nana, giving her own life in the ultimate sacrifice.
2 Pet Shop of Horrors: Consequences Of Adopting A Pet
Pet Shop of Horrors is about a mysterious pet shop run by a mystery man, Count D, who sells rare pets to people who are all longing for something special. However, there are possible consequences to owning each pet. If the agreements are followed, all is well. But if they are broken, the shop cannot be responsible for the gruesome fates the owners may face.
What is sad is so many of the people who find themselves adopting pets have already been subject to tragedy and, due to their longing for loved ones, break the contract and find themselves at the mercy of their so-called “pets.”
1 No.6: Nezumi Leaves Shion
No.6 takes place in a dystopian city surrounded by walls and holding many secrets. As Shion, a boy raised in the rich environment of his home gives shelter to a poor boy named Nezumi, their lives come together as they discover the secrets of their world. At the end of the series, the walls of No.6 fall, letting the city’s citizens choose the city or their freedom. Nezumi, who has fallen in love with Shion, promises he will be back when the time is right and seals the promise with a kiss before venturing into the unknown world.
