10 Ridiculously Overpowered Magical Girl Attacks That Belong In A Shonen Series

[ad_1]

Magical girls, especially since the ’90s where it became popular to conflate them with the superhero genre, are known for their flashy, colorful spells. The ones that summon an extra ribbon or a pair of wings tend to be the subject of ridicule, often in other anime, but there are plenty of magical girl attacks that could easily take on any powerful shonen hero looking for a challenge. In fact, many of these wouldn’t be out of place at all in a shonen series.

After all, plenty of magical girls are known for having power over fire, lightning, thunder, and even death and destruction, among other impressive abilities. Some can summon powerful beasts, like dragons or phoenixes, and sometimes the spells that come with the fancy new tiara can be pretty impressive, too.

10 Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha: Nanoha’s Starlight Breaker

nanoha Starlight Breaker

In Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, Nanoha’s Starlight Breaker is one of her signature spells. Said to be a variation of her Divine Buster spell, she condenses stray mana into a sphere through which she releases a powerful beam.

This is also a pragmatic attack to use towards the end of a battle, as there will be excess energy surrounding the battlefield. Because of this, Nanoha can use it even if she runs out of energy herself.

9 Sailor Moon: Sailor Jupiter Has Supreme Thunder Dragon

Jupiter Supreme Dragon

During the second season of Sailor Moon, the Scouts each find a hidden power within themselves in great times of duress, usually when trying to protect someone. Sailor Jupiter unlocked the attack, “Supreme Thunder Dragon,” in which her electrical power took the form of a massive dragon.

In the original English dub, Sailor Jupiter even commands the forces of “love and nature” to help her summon this attack. In the Viz translation, she asks the planet Jupiter to “bring forth the storm, summon the clouds, and bring down your thunder.”

8 Pretty Cure: Shiny Luminous Summons The Power Of The Phoenix

Shiny Luminous Pheonix

In Futari wa Pretty Cure Max Heart 2: Yukizora no Tomodachi, Shiny Luminous becomes inspired after meeting a bay phoenix, Hinata, who wanted to fly and gave her a share of her powers – as did her allies, including Cure Black and Cure White.

This not only completes Hinata’s transformation into a full phoenix, it grants Shiny Luminous new powers and a second transformation. In this new form, she obtains fire powers and healing abilities.

7 Wedding Peach: Angel Salvia Can Attack With Two Swords At Once With Saint Twin Sword

Wedding Peach Salvia Swords

In Wedding Peach, Scarlet O’Hara is the fourth Love Angel, Angel Salvia. She might be named after a famous romantic heroine, but she is a violent, merciless loner, so the series tends to give her more serious attacks when compared to her comrades.

Many of her attacks involve the use of a sword, such as Bridal Fire, which emits fire from said sword. In Wedding Peach DX, she upgrades to two swords with Saint Twin Sword, attacking with both at the same time.

6 Sailor Moon: Sailor Uranus Is Already A Force To Be Reckoned With Through World Shaking

Uranus World Shaking

Sailor Uranus is the Sailor Scout of the Wind and she proves herself a force to be reckoned with, something made clear in most of her attacks. With World Shaking, she commands a powerful blast of wind, shaped like a planet, that visibly breaks the earth beneath it, and can even be used to create a powerful vacuum.

In theory, Space Turbulence, which seems to conjure the force of space itself, is probably meant to be her most powerful attack, but it failed in its first appearance. A corrupted version of this attack, Galactica Space Turbulence, also appeared when she was under Galaxia’s control.

5 Magic Knight Rayearth: Hikaru Brings Down The Storm With Crimson/Ruby Lightning

Rayearth Hikaru Lightning

In Magic Knight Rayearth, three young girls find themselves transported into a magical world where things aren’t exactly what they seem, and each of them represents the elements of fire, water, and air.

Hikaru, the de facto leader of the three girls, is associated with fire, but in her greatest attack, she commands thunder and lightning. This final attack, known as Crimson Lightning or Ruby Lightning, is known for causing great damage.

4 Wedding Peach: Wedding Peach Blows Away The Enemy With Heart Impact

As mentioned, Wedding Peach DX was known for having more popular attacks than the original series, in part due to better animation. While the Heart Impact attack is technically attributed to Momoko, Wedding Peach herself, she also summons the power of the Saint Grenade with her friends sharing their powers.

Not only does Heart Impact showcase the power of teamwork and friendship, which tends to be an important theme in shonen, it’s an extremely powerful attack. Wedding Peach shoots a powerful burst of energy from a winged gun to take down some of the most powerful enemies.

3 Tokyo Mew Mew: Mew Zakuro Has A Powerful Energy Whip

Mew Zakuro Tokyo Mew MEw

Tokyo Mew Mew already likes to have fun with the magical girl genre, dealing more with science fiction than magic with its focus on genetic engineering, and it was at one point even going to be a horror series. The lone wolf of the team, Mew Zakuro, is one of the fiercest Mew Mews.

She uses a weapon known as the ZaCross Whip in an attack called Ribbon ZaCross Pure where she summons a whip of purple energy. While the other Mew Mews correspond to earth, wind, and water, it’s a little unclear what element Zakuro derives her power from, although some fans suggest light or energy. The base of her weapon also transforms into a cross, implying it’s also powered by her faith.

2 Sailor Moon: Sailor Saturn Has The Power Of Death & Destruction On Her Side

Sailor Saturn with the Silence Glaive, Sailor Moon Crystal

As the Sailor Scouts are usually thought of as having cute and colorful powers, it can be easy to forget that there’s a literal Sailor Scout of Death and Destruction: Sailor Saturn. Admittedly, this can be because she has a limited physical role in the series.

One of her most famous attacks, which was used against the eldritch horror Pharaoh 90, is Death Reborn Revolution. It’s often mistaken for the attack she used to destroy the world, but Sailor Saturn actually didn’t need words for that.

1 Revolutionary Girl Utena: Through The Rose Bride, Utena Can Summon The Sword Of Dios

Revolutionary Girl Utena

In Revolutionary Girl Utena, during the Dueling Games, the Rose Bride, Anthy, can go into a trance and summon both the power and sword of Dios from her body. It is to be used by her corresponding duelist, a role usually assigned to Utena in the series.

Of course, things are darker than they appear, with the true nature of the game, what exactly happened to Dios, and the true nature of Anthy.
