My Hero Academia combines the anime superhero genre with the classic high school paradigm, meaning the main characters are all 15-18 years of age, mostly trending towards 15 and 16. Izuku is a first-year at U.A., which is a heroic high school, and he’s older than some classmates and younger than others.
The students of Class 1-A were born all over the year, with some having January or February birthdays while others were born in July, September or November. In fact, the oldest students might be almost an entire year older than the youngest, and at a glance, it’s not always obvious who is the oldest in this class. How do the ten oldest students rank, and what are their birthdates?
10 Tenya Iida – August 22nd
Tenya Iida is a melee hero who emphasizes quick running and kicking attacks, thanks to his Engine Quirk. He also has the distinction of being Class 1-A’s representative, and if U.A. had a student council, he would be a strong contender for student council president, no doubt.
Tenya Iida ranks roughly in the middle of Class 1-A when it comes to age, being the 10th oldest student out of a class of 20. At home, though, he is several years younger than his big brother Tensei, who was the Pro Hero Ingenium. Tenya really looks up to him.
9 Mina Ashido – July 30th
Mina Ashido is the acid girl, and she even tried to name herself after the alien queen from director James Cameron’s 1986 hit Aliens. She may not be a great student on paper, but Mina makes up for it with sheer enthusiasm and creativity in combat, and she has devised many clever uses of her Acid Quirk.
Mina is a huge gossip, and she is always looking out for the slightest hint of a new romantic pairing, especially between Ochaco and Izuku, and even Shota Aizawa and Ms. Joke, a teacher from Ketsubutsu. In battle, Mina is a reliable and cheerful teammate who fears no enemy.
8 Hanta Sero – July 28th
Hanta Sero is largely a background character, one of several Class 1-A students who only make token appearances in the show. In fact, some Class 1-B students have gotten more screentime than him, such as Itsuka Kendo and Neito Monoma.
Still, Hanta Sero is trying his best, and his signature Tape Quirk makes him an effective support and rescue hero. He fought well on Bakugo’s team in the joint training arc, for example, and enjoyed a swift victory.
7 Izuku Midoriya – July 15th
The shonen protagonist himself, Izuku Midoriya, ranks as class 1-A’s 7th oldest student, having been born on July 15th, right in the middle of summer. Izuku has a burning desire to become the new #1 hero, and his passion is hotter than any summer sun.
Izuku was the one chosen by the hero All Might to carry on One For All’s legacy, and he is working incredibly hard to unlock that Quirk’s potential, and his own. In recent episodes, in fact, Izuku finally started using Blackwhip, a Quirk of a previous OFA user.
6 Denki Kaminari – June 29th
Like his friend Mina, the electric Denki Kaminari may get bad grades, but he compensates with a powerful Quirk and sheer enthusiasm in battle as a trainee hero. Denki longs to become a real hero, but he’s also humble enough to admit his weaknesses, and work to overcome them. He benefitted greatly from tutoring to pass the midterms, for example.
Denki isn’t a huge standout in Class 1-A, but then again, his electric Quirk worked wonders against the arrogant Shiketsu student Seiji Shishikura, and he was surprisingly crafty during the joint training battle against Juzo Shishida’s team. He’s full of surprises.
5 Rikido Sat0 – June 19th
Rikido Sato is Class 1-A’s 5th oldest student, and is certainly one of the biggest, too. This well-muscled boy can power up if he ingests sugar, though the benefits are temporary. He and Eijiro Kirishima fought Cementoss together in a mock battle, but they ultimately failed.
Rikido got over himself, though, and continued to train and study to better himself. He is also a gentle giant, having a kind disposition and a hobby of baking cakes, to the delight of Class 1-A’s girls. He even won the dorm contest because of his outstanding baking.
4 Toru Hagakure – June 16th
Toru Hagakure is the invisible girl of Class 1-A, and she relies on stealth and melee attacks to fight her enemies, since she has no ranged attacks to her name. She can also bend light with her body to blind her enemies with intense rays, a tricks she was seen using in the Provisional Hero License Exam.
Toru is a cheerful and fun-loving person who sees the best in everything and everyone, and she even cheered on her classmates with a bright orange cheerleader outfit. Also, despite her petite size and silly personality, Toru is among the class’s oldest students, and the oldest girl in particular.
3 Yuga Aoyama – May 30th
Yuga Aoyama is a dedicated ranged fighter, having a Navel Laser Quirk that can strike enemies from afar with heatless, kinetic attacks. He might remind fans of Cyclops of X-Men fame, but without the trademark red visor or ruby shades.
Yuga often alienates others with his pretentious attitude, but he always means well, and he actually identifies with Izuku, since both boys often struggle to control the harsh downsides of their respective Quirks. Izuku now sees Yuga as a friend, and Yuga was also very helpful during Class 1-A’s concert, acting as a living disco ball.
2 Mashirao Ojiro – May 28th
Mashirao is among Class 1-A’s least remarkable students, and he has notched very few notable victories, though he and Tenya Iida were a fine team against Power Loader during a practice battle. Mashirao is noted for having a long and powerful tail, which serves as a fifth limb in battle.
In a fight, Mashirao is a dedicated melee fighter with his tail and martial arts, as his hero costume suggests. But he is also competent at search and rescue, since he can carry people while also swinging around on his tail in a cluttered urban environment.
1 Katsuki Bakugo – April 20th
Izuku’s childhood friend, Katsuki Bakugo, has the distinction of being Class 1-A’s oldest student, and he turned 16 almost as soon as the semester started. His attitude is hardly the most mature of Class 1-A, though, given his serious egocentric and uncooperative nature. Mentally, he’s not the oldest after all
Bakugo is slowly working on that, though, and he also has considerable brainpower and an incredible Explosion Quirk to his name, ensuring that he always ranks highly among Class 1-A’s students in many regards. Once he fixes his bad attitude, he should become a model student for all to emulate.
