10 Movie Franchises That Went One Installment Too Many

[ad_1]

There are many massive film franchises that have made amazing sequel after amazing sequel. These franchises changed the face of their genre. Unfortunately not every franchise is so lucky. There are many famous franchises that have gone just one step too far.

With each movie, they get farther and farther away from what made the first installment so special. Some of these franchises even have more bad movies than good movies at this point. It seems like Hollywood still won’t stop milking these films, despite the diminishing box office returns. Maybe one day they will produce another blockbuster.

10 Die Hard Just Wouldn’t Die

The first Die Hard is an absolutely legendary film. It is a quintessential action movie and some debate that it is also one of the best Christmas movies. The allure of the average man stopping terrorists and saving his family had fans rushing to the box office.

But each movie moved farther and farther away from that concept and eventually turned into just run-of-the-mill, over-the-top action movies. Each sequel failed to recapture the magic of John McClane.

9 Pirates Of The Caribbean Went Downhill Fast

Pirates of the Caribbean Curse of the Black Pearl

Pirates Of The Caribbean was the ultimate action-adventure franchise. It took to the seven seas and swept fans off their feet. Based on the Disney ride, Pirates Of The Caribbean captured viewers’ hearts like nothing else did. With its swashbuckling action, humor, and of course the antics of Captain Jack Sparrow.

The first three movies were smashing successes but the 4th and 5th movies left fans less than satisfied. The plots got less interesting and the characters became more predictable and less exciting. There is another film in development but it will be interesting to see if it can bring fans back.

8 Alien Has Been A Mess Since The ’90s

Alien was a sci-fi thriller masterpiece. It captured the sci-fi magic that permeated the ’80s. The character of Ripley was an unconventional star at the time, and Sigourney Weaver’s performance made her one of the most iconic film characters of all time.

When Aliens came out, it was more of an action movie, but it managed to become another smash hit again. Fans loved seeing Ripley back in action and wanted more. Then in 1992 Alien 3 released and the ride was over. Ever since then, the movies have been a storytelling mess and have been a disappointment to fans of the franchise.

7 The Godfather Just Couldn’t Stick The Landing

Francis Ford Coppola created a true masterpiece that will stand the test of time with The Godfather. It altered the entire mobster movie genre and is very close to a perfect film. Viewers didn’t think it could get better, then The Godfather Part II released, and it got better, a rare time that a sequel is better than the original.

The performances of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino elevated the film to a whole other level. Then almost two decades later, The Godfather Part III came out. It failed to grasp what made the first two films amazing and fans just didn’t respond to it the same way.

6 Indiana Jones & The Kingdom Of Failed Movies

In the ’80s, Indiana Jones ruled the cinemas as a juggernaut action-adventure franchise. Harrison Ford’s gruff and adventurous portrayal of the character connected with viewers and the character became a cultural icon. His adventures continued in 2008 when they released Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

The movie was met with a less than warm reception. People found the story dull, the action scenes boring and the ending left people feeling unsatisfied. And while previous installments dealt with the supernatural, Crystal Skull involved aliens and it just didn’t thrill fans in the same way. Indiana Jones 5 is currently filming with Harrison Ford reprising his role.

5 Terminator Can’t Let Go Of Past Movies

While the first two Terminator movies blew people away, all the ones after that just couldn’t seem to get people excited. Whether they tried prequels or moving the focus away from Sarah Connor, it just couldn’t work. Terminator: Genisys is perhaps the biggest failure of the franchise.

It tried to rewrite past movies, even bringing back a CGI young Arnold Schwarzenegger, but it missed the mark on all fronts. The latest movie, Terminator: Dark Fate was actually a critical success and fans enjoyed it, but unfortunately, it bombed at the box office due to franchise fatigue.

4 The Fast & The Furious Is Just Ridiculous & Makes No Sense

What started out as a movie about street racing has somehow ended up in space. While they are all extremely financially successful, The Fast and The Furious franchise has left logic and physics behind and gone all in for stunts with no plot.

While there are still more movies in production, fans are left wondering what else is left for the Fast Family to accomplish now and how can the movies continue to top what they have already done.

3 Taken Was A One-Shot Wonder

Liam Neeson’s Taken was a one-hit-wonder action movie. The first movie had fans on the edge of their seat and they were happy when a sequel was announced. Taken 2 and Taken 3 unfortunately were less than stellar.

Each movie was duller than the previous one and bad editing made the film feel choppy as it struggled to have Liam Neeson continue as an action star. The franchise even tried to spin off into a failed 2-season TV show.

2 Lethal Weapon Should Have Stopped With One Film

Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon

This buddy cop film is an ’80s must-see movie. The rash Riggs being teamed up with Murtaugh, a cop almost done with his time on the force. It became an archetype for many team-ups going forward and while the movie doesn’t necessarily hold up to today’s standards, it was a smash hit back then.

The sequels failed to innovate on the idea, essentially rehashing the same type of story over and over. Without innovation, people stopped coming back to see the films.

1 Home Alone Got Lost Without Its Iconic Lead

Macaulay Culkin was the glue of the franchise. He was charismatic on-screen as the mischievous Kevin McCallister. Even from a young age, he was a stand-out star and helped to rocket Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost In New York to new heights.

The movies were fun, adventurous, and hilarious making them beloved Christmas movies. Home Alone 3 anddid not have Culkin, moved away from the Christmas theme, and did not resonate nearly as well with fans. When the conversation about Home Alone comes up, people rarely mention the 3rd and 4th movies.
