Between foot races and car chases, anime keeps finding new ways to surprise the audience, giving them something to root for. A good race can come in to save the day, changing an anime’s pacing with a dramatic flair. There are plenty of non-racing anime with excellent racing scenes.
10 The Marathon (Mob Psycho 100)
Hoping to impress his crush in Mob Psycho 100, Mob enters a marathon. Mob does his his best to finish in the top ten despite having finished his last marathon in 291st place. This is a race that allows the viewer to root for a real underdog.
Mob refuses Dimple’s offer to possess him so that he might actually win the marathon. This race is intense, despite the simple plot of watching a boy do everything he can is. Mob is a sweating mess, and faints before he can finish the marathon.
9 Yuki VS. Kyo – The Long Distance Run (Fruits Basket)
The students of Kaibara Municipal High School have to perform their yearly endurance test in a marathon. Kyo jumps at the chance to race against Yuki, desperate to prove that he is worthy of the Sohma name. In the few scenes fans see of their race, Yuki is effortless in his actions. Kyo is forced to work hard as usual. Had the race not been interrupted, it would have undoubtedly become more dramatic. This is always the case with the competing cousins.
8 Akane VS. Kaori – Food Delivery Race (Ranma 1/2)
Each contestant attempts to take their bowl of ramen to the finish line without spilling a drop. There are many competitors in this race. But it’s really a battle between Akane, competing on her father’s orders, and Kaori, who aims to win the right to marry Ranma.
Though the race of Ranma 1/2 is mostly whimsical, the two women compete energetically. They dodge pitfalls, attacking one another with dinner utensils and ingredients. Eventually, they exhaust one another to the point that they both have to crawl to the finish line, with Akane the lucky victor.
7 Goku VS. Piccolo – Driving Licence Race (Dragon Ball Z)
With the intention of getting their driving licenses, Goku and Piccolo get behind the wheel in Dragon Ball Z. Though this doesn’t start as a race, it quickly becomes one with a little light-hearted goading from Goku. Piccolo, determined to be the best driver, rushes through the course.
He makes sharp turns and rides down the side of a steep hill just to keep up with Goku. Ultimately, what makes this race so intense is how it ends. It ends with a fiery explosion with two charred cars and no driving license for anyone.
6 The Sports Festival Obstacle Course (Kaichou Wa Maid-Sama)
Misaki Ayuzawa is an intense character, especially on her school sports day. She intends to win every single race she enters. Though she wins all of her competitions with a steely determination, things become heated during the last race. The prize is a kiss from Hanazona Sakura, the most sought-after girl in the school.
Already exhausted, Misaki had planned to skip the last race. In an attempt to defend her friend’s honor, Misaki enters. Whether she’s navigating the steep slope, climbing ropes, or traversing the swimming pool, Misaki does everything with a fiery aura that makes the competition quiver in fear.
5 The Pokémon Rancher Race (Pokémon Indigo)
Before this race even begins, things start off fiercely. Rancher Dario ensures his main rival, Lara, cannot compete by injuring her with the help of Team Rocket. With the help of Ash, Lara’s Ponyta can still compete, ensuring a race for the ages.
Between dodging Team Rocket’s underhanded attacks, avoiding obstacles, and trying to maintain speed, Ash is barely able to keep up with Dario’s Dodrio. With a fiery determination, Ponyta evolves into Rapidash, the fastest land Pokémon. With its extra speed, Rapidash catches up, winning the race for Ash and Lara.
4 The 24 Hour Road Race (Fairy Tail)
In a race where all magic except flight is permitted, things were bound to get intense in Fairy Tail. This contest sees that every wizard has one shared goal past carrying their wyvern scale to the finish line. Characters don’t want to come last as they’ll suffer the punishment game for the loser. Between using drawings to trip rivals, ice to make them slip, or trapping them, it’s everyone for themselves. In a game of sabotage, viewers are kept guessing who will be the victor in the perfect mix of comedy and action.
3 Guy Vs. Kakashi (Naruto Shippuden)
As Kakashi’s ‘eternal rival’, Guy issues a challenge to race from the village entrance to the top of Hokage Rock. They leap majestically over buildings, crash disgracefully down mountains, run through the village, and fight in midair.
Guy and Kakashi have the time of their lives in this race, showing that a race between rivals can also be fun. As expected from the pair, it is a neck-and-neck tie to the very end. Kakashi earns a much-needed victory before he becomes the new village Hokage.
2 The U.A. High School Sports Festival (My Hero Academia)
My Hero Academia’s sports festival has students of U.A High School competing for the honor of first place. It’s an anything-goes battle. The competitors fight robots, navigate minefields, and ward off their rivals, all with the use of their quirks. With multiple rounds, the weakest gets eliminated from the festival.
In a shock twist, the competition becomes even more intense when a cavalry battle is introduced. In teams of 1-4 members, the underdogs have a chance to beat the first-place champion to take the lead in the competition themselves. Granted, everyone wants to win this contest, but they shall only be victorious if they can stand the burden of being the best.
1 The Hotshell Race (One Piece: Gold)
All drivers in the Hotshell Race have two advantages to help them win this race. They can customize their cars however they please, and turtle cars allow the engines to drive the car. Turtle cars leave the competitors free to steer and combat the competition without having to focus on anything else.
Luffy, Chopper, and Usopp rush to enter the race. They are sure they can win the grand prize despite lacking the experience of their competitors. With six cars, the race begins, quickly becoming one of potshots and dirty tricks. With Guns, cannons, oil spills, and crashes, and Luffy’s signature rubber body, this race has it all.
