Jujutsu Kaisen‘s anime has made a huge name for itself, and its manga has sold tens of millions of copies, which makes the franchise a strong contender for being one of the new “big three” of shonen, alongside competing series such as My Hero Academia and Demon Slayer. There’s even a feature-length Jujutsu Kaisen movie coming up, starring Satoru Gojo.
Jujutsu Kaisen‘s anime is a solid 24 episodes, and the manga has enough material for another season, and perhaps a third. Notably, the JJK anime is densely plotted and rarely wastes a single second, so fans are encouraged to watch every last bit of the anime to get the full story. With the possible exception of Episode 21, featuring a baseball game, no episodes should be skipped, and these ten episodes are especially plot-heavy and are a key part of the story.
10 Episode 1: “Ryomen Sukuna”
Even if an anime series is incredibly long and has a lot of filler episodes, the first episode is still important to watch, since it launches the entire franchise and sets the story’s tone. The same is true in Jujutsu Kaisen, where Episode 1, “Ryomen Sukuna,” introduces many key characters.
The pilot episode welcomes the hero, Yuji Itadori, to the stage, and it also establishes the basic concept of curses, with Megumi Fushiguro providing vital exposition. This is also the episode where Yuji eats Sukuna’s first of twenty fingers.
9 Episode 2: “For Myself”
The first half of Jujutsu Kaisen is especially heavy on plot, since it has to establish the series’ combat system, major characters and overall plot, and that includes the second episode, “For Myself.” In this episode, Yuji is told that he must eat more of Sukuna’s fingers out of duty, and he must find a way to keep Sukuna under control in the meantime.
The second episode also deepens Satoru Gojo’s character somewhat, and brings Yuji to the Tokyo jujutsu school for the first time. Naturally, seeing how Yuji gets into the series’ main “magic school” is not something to be missed.
8 Episode 3: “Girl Of Steel”
The third episode, “Girl of Steel,” gets its name from the character Nobara Kugisaki, who is introduced in this episode’s events. Nobara is the third member of Yuji’s main team, along with Megumi, and she is certainly more than just a token girl. She is a tough fighter with a punk attitude, but a good heart, too.
Nobara’s backstory is explored in this episode as well, which helps establish where she came from and how she views the world. This episode also demonstrates how Nobara’s hammer-and-nails combat style works, which is a sight to see.
7 Episode 5: “Curse Womb Must Die -II-“
This episode concluded the battle against the first special-grade curse Yuji ever fought, and incredibly, the shonen hero actually dies in this episode, thanks to Sukuna. Megumi and Nobara briefly mourn their new friend’s demise, then learn about the joint training battle that’s coming up.
Soon, the Tokyo jujutsu school will meet with the Kyoto school, and Nobara and Megumi meet their upperclassmen, including the weapon-slinging Maki Zenin and Panda. Elsewhere, the main villains hash out their plans for Yuji and Satoru. These are all vital developments.
6 Episode 6: “After Rain”
The very next episode also has some vital plot developments, including Yuji’s confrontation with Sukuna in an alternate dimension. Yuji is brought back to life, and this proves that Sukuna can both take Yuji’s life and give it back. Yuji reunites with Satoru, but notably, Megumi and Nobara are unaware of all this.
Satoru begins Yuji’s unusual new training regimen, which involves watching several emotionally impactful movies while restraining his own emotions and cursed energy flow. This is also the episode where the villains make their first move on Satoru, with the cyclopean curse Jogo taking him on directly.
5 Episode 8: “Boredom”
The eighth episode of Jujutsu Kaisen, titled “Boredom,” certainly won’t have viewers feeling bored in any of its scenes. On the contrary, this is a busy and exciting episode that features the explosive first meeting of the Tokyo and Kyoto students, including the brawny Aoi Todo.
This is a key moment for establishing who Aoi Todo and Mai Zenin are, and in the process, this episode helps explore the traditionalist and influential Zenin clan. This episode also explores the tense Tokyo-Kyoto politics where Satoru Gojo and Yoshinobu Gakuganji are concerned. This episode also marks Junpei Yoshino’s first appearance.
4 Episode 9: “Small Fry And Reverse Retribution”
This episode introduces the no-nonsense jujutsu sorcerer Kento Nanami, a new ally of Yuji’s. It also greatly expands upon the villainous and bizarre Mahito, not to mention Junpei Yoshino. In this episode, Yuji and Nanami are hot on Mahito’s heels.
“Small Fry and Reverse Retribution” introduces the concept of humans being mutated to resemble curses, which is the first major example of Mahito’s ability to reshape someone’s flesh to match their soul. The stakes are raised yet again.
3 Episode 10: “Idle Transfiguration”
The very next episode, “Idle Transfiguration,” explores Mahito in even greater depth, and the episode’s dialogue helps expand upon the concept and behavior of curses and their relationship to humanity. “Idle Transfiguration” also fleshes out Mahito’s cruel plan to rid the entire world of humanity.
This episode’s plot developments make it clear that Mahito must be taken down, as well as how easily Mahito can manipulate and mislead vulnerable people like Junpei, who suffered at the hands of bullies. It’s no wonder Yuji attacked him with such ferocity.
2 Episode 17: “Kyoto Sister School Exchange Event -Group Battle Three-“
The 17th episode of Jujutsu Kaisen continues the fierce battle between the twin jujutsu schools, and in this episode, the story dives even deeper into Maki and Mai’s relationship and their struggle with their tyrannical family. The Zenin family is powerful and influential, but being born into that family isn’t all fun and games.
This episode makes good use of flashbacks to show how Maki boldly defied her tyrannical family and plans to rule it herself someday, and her sister Mai had no choice but to get dragged into this whole mess, whether she liked it or not. Hence, the bitter feud between the Zenin sisters.
1 Episode 22: “The Origin Of Blind Obedience”
The 22nd episode of Jujutsu Kaisen takes place after the Kyoto school event, when Yuji and his team get a new mission involving some peculiar deaths involving automatic doors and curse energy. This episode sets up the rest of Season 1’s final story arc, so naturally, it’s not an episode to miss.
Episode 22 also explores a bit more of Megumi’s backstory at his old junior high school, and it also explains more about Megumi’s sister. The cursed womb brothers are set up as villains who will see action in the next few episodes.
