10 MCU Characters Who Deserved Better

[ad_1]

As a franchise, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has given its fans some of the best heroes and villains in modern times. While the movies aren’t perfect—and have actually been criticized by preeminent figures as having poor cinematic value—the MCU still manages to weave its own brand of magic around its viewers.

But even within the MCU, some characters receive a better fate than others. Villains are often discarded after one movie, but some heroes don’t fare much better. Other characters reach the ending of their arc in less-than-ideal ways, with lackluster or unwarranted deaths, and they deserved more.

10 Hawkeye Should Have Received More Attention In The Movies

If audiences had to choose a character most neglected by the MCU, it’d doubtlessly be Hawkeye. Clint Barton had a fairly strong start with his intriguing (but brief) first appearance in Thor and his important role in the first Avengers movie. Furthermore, Avengers: Age of Ultron introduced the element of his family, which promised to develop him further. However, that never happens and the character fades more and more out of the franchise. In Avengers: Infinity War, he doesn’t show up, and in Endgame, it’s revealed he’s become the vigilante assassin, Ronin.

With the Disney+ series Hawkeye, Clint is finally receiving some much-needed attention. He’s finally acknowledged as being deaf, and his dynamic with his family shrines through. However, the series is as much about Kate Bishop as it is about him (perhaps working to set up the Young Avengers). Ultimately, Clint’s role should have been larger in the movies, and his series doesn’t really compensate for this omision.

9 Black Widow Dies Before The Release Of Her Origin Story

Black Widow Regret

Natasha Romanov first appears in Iron Man 2 as an agent assigned to keep an eye on Tony Stark. After joining the Avengers, she grows in importance. Even if her decisions aren’t always the best ones, fans eagerly awaited her solo movie. However, Natasha’s origin story comes too late.

She’s the one who takes charge of the Avengers after Thanos’s first victory, and she ends up sacrificing herself to acquire the Soul Stone. It’s only after her death in Avengers: Endgame that Black Widow comes out. It’s too little too late, and Natasha deserved better.

8 Quicksilver Is Only Present For One Movie

Wanda Maximoff is becoming one of the most important characters in the MCU. However, her brother doesn’t fare nearly as well. Pietro Maximoff appears alongside Wanda in Avengers: Age of Ultron. He sacrifices himself to save Hawkeye and is shot by the rogue A.I. while saving Clint’s life.

For a while, it seemed like he’d return in WandaVision. Evan Peters—the actor playing the character in the X-Men franchise—shows up in the Disney+ series as Wanda’s brother. However, his return turns out to be a lie. This version of Quicksilver is the brainwashed citizen of Westview, Ralph Bohner. All things considered, Wanda’s brother definitely deserved better.

7 J.A.R.V.I.S.’s Death Isn’t Even Acknowledged By Most People

Although a more unusual presence in the MCU, J.A.R.V.I.S. is Tony Stark’s AI and one of his greatest creations. Programmed to learn and have his own perspective on things, J.A.R.V.I.S. has a sense of identity that makes him practically human. He displays emotion and has a particularly close bond with his creator.

Consequently, it’s very sad when his death in Age of Ultron isn’t even acknowledged. Much of his code lives on in Vision, but by his own admittance, Vision isn’t J.A.R.V.I.S. Through Vision’s creation—or perhaps the interference of the Avengers in that process—Tony loses his closest friend. However, J.A.R.V.I.S. is barely mourned.

6 Frigga’s Character Could Have Been So Much More

The adoptive mother of fan-favorite villain Loki, Frigga is the only one who shows any support for the God of Mischief during his less-than-ideal upbringing in Asgard. She even supports his ascension to the throne of Asgard in Thor. A chasm is created between the two after Loki learns about his adoption. However, despite her lies, Frigga loves her son.

Thor: The Dark World suggests that she’s the only reason he isn’t executed upon being brought back to Asgard. Unfortunately, Frigga dies in the same movie. She appears again in Endgame during the Time Heist and has a conversation with Thor, but she could have been so much more.

5 Sif And The Warriors Three Disappear From The Franchise

Lady Sif And Warriors Three kneel before Loki

Thor’s close friends and longtime companions, Sif and the Warriors Three are a fairly important presence in the God of Thunder’s origin story. However, after the first Thor movie, they begin to fade more and more. Sif makes brief cameos in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Loki, but in the main franchise, she seems to have completely vanished—and not because of the Snap.

Meanwhile, the Warriors Three are all killed when Hela invades Asgard. While the characters were never developed enough to fully engage the viewer, they had potential and deserved better.

4 Thor Hasn’t Had The Best Luck As Of Late

Frigga and the warriors of Asgard may have had a horrible fate, but Thor himself hasn’t had the best of luck either. Despite being a light-hearted entry in the franchise, Thor: Ragnarok forces the God of Thunder to order the destruction of his own realm to defeat his murderous sister, Hela. The remaining Asgardians are then crushed by Thanos and Loki is killed.

Thor’s attempt to avenge his people doesn’t go well, and in his anger, he aims for Thanos’s chest instead of his head. Following Thanos’s Snap, he succumbs to depression and alcoholism. Avengers: Endgame reveals that he’s still worthy of Mjolnir, and he departs Earth with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Still, Thor’s fans can’t help but feel the God of Thunder deserved better.

3 Bucky Barnes Really Can’t Catch A Break

Bucky Barnes Therapy

Captain America’s closest friend, Bucky Barnes is captured and experimented on by Arnim Zola during World War II. The serum in his blood saves him when he falls from the train in the Alps. However, he may have wished differently as he’s found by Hydra (again) and turned into the deadly assassin, the Winter Soldier.

Over half a century later, Bucky is finally free of the trigger words controlling the Soldier inside him. He’s trying to rebuild his life, but with Steve Rogers choosing to go back in time, he has very little left. His guilt still plagues him and may never completely leave him, and although he’s a victim, many fans—and even some of the MCU’s writers—see him as a villain and haven’t given him the chance he deserves.

2 Thanos’s Death In What If…? Is Really Insulting

The Disney+ series What If…? includes a lot of interesting scenarios that explore ideas the main arc has been unable to show. But that isn’t always a good thing. In What If… Ultron Won?, the AI Ultron prevails over the Avengers and takes over Vision’s body. When Thanos arrives, he finds Earth destroyed by Ultron.

Ultron immediately takes the Mad Titan down with a single blow from the Mind Stone. Thanos may be one of the cruelest villains of the Marvel Universe, but his influence and power are unquestionable. His death at Ultron’s hands is rather insulting, both for him and for the Avengers’ team that tried so hard to defeat him.

1 Tony Stark Seems Doomed To Die In Every Universe

Throughout his stint in the MCU, Tony Stark has earned both a lot of fans and plenty of detractors. His final stand against Thanos is as memorable as the moment he reveals the truth about his superhero identity. But What If…? makes light of Tony’s sacrifice.

In the show, Tony is killed over and over again—in a myriad of different ways—on a single occasion before he even becomes Iron Man. It’s understandable that the series might want to focus on other characters, but this seems a little much, and Iron Man deserved better.
