Isekai often follows a specific formula: a person is sent to another world, and has to quickly adapt to the world by using their kindness, their intelligence, or their overpowered skill set. Unfortunately, these advantages often make the heroes boring or unlikable.
On the other end of the spectrum, their advantages are countered by a naïve nature, making them prone to making foolish mistakes or getting manipulated to the point of frustrating fans. One wrong move can be enough to ruin a character for some fans, even if they get a redemption arc later in the story.
10 Sword Art Online: Kirigaya Suguha Was Too Obsessed With Kazuto
Kirigaya had the potential to be one of SAO‘s best characters. She was incredibly talented in kendo, and never had any interest in online games until after the SAO incident, making her want to understand what her cousin Kazuto went through. In ALfhelm Online, she established herself as a capable fighter, having a variety of magical spells in her arsenal.
Unfortunately, most fans can’t stand that she had a crush on Kazuto, and in her attempt to get over him, she fell for him all over again in the game, despite the fact that he looked exactly the same as he did in real life.
9 My Next Life As A Villainess: All Routes Lead To Doom!: Catarina Claes Was Too Dense
Catarina started off as a well-intended, sweet character with some strange quirks. She wanted to change her life for the better, helping the people around her, although sometimes for the purpose of protecting her own life from a Bad End.
She eventually obtained the affections of multiple people, all of whom confessed to her. However, most of those confessions bounced right off of her because she was too frustratingly dense. Catarina perfectly showed the flaws of an otome game’s harem end, as she unintentionally strung along multiple love interests, who one by one gave up on ever finding romance with anyone other than her even though she was already engaged.
8 The Precious Sister Of The Villainous Grand Duke: Anissa Lagrange Trusted Her Brother Too Much
Anissa, despite being a reincarnated person living two lifetimes, was far too trusting. Being familiar with the story events and characters, she knew that her brother, Dietrich was a villain. She trusted him regardless, even though he acted coldly towards her and even told her that he never considered her to be family.
Even when she was given an opportunity to leave her oppressive estate, she stayed behind to help someone who never asked for any. She started off as a character who was making smart choices in order to survive, but her optimism later put her life in danger and made some readers frustrated.
7 The Rising Of The Shield Hero: Motoyasu Kitamura Started Off Confident & Quickly Became Arrogant
Motoyasu was one of the four legendary heroes, and like the Sword And Bow heroes, he arrived at the world exuding confidence. At first, they seemed admirable. Not only did they know a lot about the world and how it works, but they knew exactly how to protect their own rights.
Unfortunately, Motoyasu’s character was swiftly ruined after being duped by Princess Malty Melromarc. He refused to see reason for the longest time, and tried on multiple occasions to steal Naofumi Iwatani’s comrades from him.
6 Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious Play: Miaka Yuki Betrayed Her Friend’s Trust
Miaka’s friend, Yui Hongo, was in the real world, holding the book that dragged Miaka into the other world. She remained with Miaka as best as she could, reading the events earnestly and feeling concerned. Miaka proved to be a great character at first, being both funny and caring enough for her new friends to even be willing to sacrifice her life for them.
When she returned to the real world, Yui was dragged into the book instead. Miaka did go back for her, but Yui went through some traumatic experiences before the friends reunited. On top of that, Yui had to hear Miaka proclaim to Tamahome that she only came back for him, leaving Yui feeling angry and betrayed.
5 Knights & Magic: Ernesti Echevalier Had A Promising Introduction But Lost His Personality Quickly
When Ernesti was first introduced, he was depicted as a programming genius who saved his colleagues from getting fired. He also was a major otaku, whose room was filled with figures of mechs. When he is reborn into the new world, his focus is solely on building and piloting giant robots.
It’s the only thing that really gets him excited, but what really ruined his character was the fact that he was reborn into a small child, never contemplating what happened to said child. The series was great for people who just wanted to see giant robots fighting, but there’s little in terms of memorable characters.
4 Who Made Me A Princess: Jennette Margarita Was Manipulated Very Easily
Jennette was the protagonist of the original novel, who befriended and even helped the Athanasia, who she believed to be her sister. Unfortunately, she was not only kind, but naïve, making her prone to being used by many of the people around her.
Her father made her think that she was the emperor’s daughter, using her strong desire for a family to make her want to get close to him, not realizing that her presence next to the emperor was slowly killing him.
3 When The Villainess Loves: Princess Libertia Chooses The Worst Love Interest
After being reincarnated into the villainess Princess Libertia, she decided to befriend and save all of the male love interests from falling in love with the female lead, who would have led them all to ruin. One by one, they fell for her because she was thoughtful and kind.
However, she never had eyes for them, and in recent chapters, started developing feelings for a love interest that was recently introduced, Daniel. No real connection was established between them, and the things that he said raised as many flags as Anakin Skywalker’s lines.
2 Ni No Kuni: Haruto Ichihara Jumped To The Wrong Conclusions Too Quickly
Haru started off as a kind guy who was good friends with Yu. After his girlfriend, Kotona Takashina, was attacked and they saw her counterpart in another world, he immediately jumped to the conclusion that the counterpart, the princess of the other world, was the reason why his girlfriend was suddenly going through such hardships.
The lie that he told himself made him prone to being used by the wrong people, prompting him to attack his friend later.
1 Sword Art Online: Kirito Was Too Overpowered
When it comes to isekai, SAO not only popularized the genre, but created one of the most infamously powerful protagonists. Kirito, as a beta tester, took advantage of many of the game’s features that were already familiar to him.
Considering the fact that he remained a solo player for a long time and that most games make it harder to level up as a player reaches higher levels, his strength should have plateaued. Even in the film, which required physical strength and agility, Kirito surpassed that hurdle with little effort and time.
