The realm of anime is a hugely diverse one, but there are definitely some trends and conventions that many series follow, especially when it comes to a series’ setting and the age of its characters. Given how many anime series are geared toward junior high and senior high students, many anime series take place at school, and the series might end during or just before graduation.
It’s true that high school graduation is a solid way to end a TV show, anime, or another story set in high school, but that doesn’t always have to be the end. Some high school characters and stories are worth having another adventure, either in a 12-episode sequel series or perhaps an OVA or anime movie showing the next chapter in these characters’ lives. After all, college and young adulthood are where a person can really figure out who they are and develop their own identity and lifestyle.
10 Maid-Sama! Could Show Misaki Truly Blossoming
Maid-Sama! is a wacky but heartfelt high school shojo series centered on Misaki Ayuzawa, the tough student council president, and the seemingly perfect Takumi Usui and their burgeoning romance. In this story, the mystery of Takumi is slowly unraveled, and Misaki learns that there’s more to school and life than chores and studying.
The original manga series ended on a high note set roughly a decade after high school graduation, but it would be intriguing to see an OVA that bridges the gap. It’s easy to imagine Misaki making the most of college, being such a responsible and proactive person.
9 Azumanga Daioh! Is Too Much Fun To End At Graduation
Azumanga Daioh! focuses mainly on a handful of friends at an ordinary Japanese high school, from early in their first year to graduation. This is a comedic slice of life story, and by the time graduation rolls around, viewers and readers will be reluctant to part ways with these charming friends.
Given each character’s eccentric personality and interests, it would be worthwhile to make an OVA starring their college selves and see how they handle the freedom of college life. Tomo, for example, would run wild while Osaka would have fun trying out different clubs.
8 Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War Would Flourish In A University Setting
Kaguya-Sama: Love is War is a thrilling series with a romantic twist, where the brilliant student council president Miyuki Shirogane and the #2 student Kaguya Shinomiya are locked in an endless battle of wits. The winner is whoever can convince the other to confess their love first.
This series is still ongoing, but most likely, it will end before the main characters graduate from their private high school. An OVA could show what Kaguya, Miyuki, and the others are up to in college, and they would have the freedom to truly express themselves, especially Chika Fujiwara and the gloomy gamer Yu Ishigami.
7 Nichijou Can Continue Its Antics At College
Nichijou is roughly similar to Azumanga Daioh!, being a comedy series focused on the zany antics of a handful of whimsical main characters. This series is even more eccentric, starring a wind-up robot girl, a talking cat, and a young professor obsessed with sharks and snacking.
These characters could have all kinds of fun at college, where they would be free to join on-campus clubs, find and feud with apartment roommates, and get into all kinds of trouble. College can be a lot of fun for adventurous people like Nichijou‘s main characters.
6 Horimiya Would Be Comfortable In A College Setting
Horimiya is a rising star in the anime world, being a heartfelt rom-com series where each main character has a hidden side that is slowly revealed over time. This series teaches viewers that there is more to people than meets the eye, and college is another fine place to explore that theme.
When this series finally ends, it could have a bonus movie or OVA set in college, where the kind Izumi Miyamura and Kyoko Hori can continue their relationship while also meeting many new people who came from all over Japan to study at their college.
5 Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-Kun Could Have A Few College OVAs
This particular high school series, Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-Kun, bases most of its antics not only on romantic hijinks but also on the creation of manga, like a sillier version of Bakuman. The heroine is Chiyo Sakura, and she is happy to help Nozaki draw new chapters of his popular shojo series, Let’s Fall in Love.
Nozaki is a hard worker, always seeking new inspiration for his shojo manga and recruiting new assistants. In college, he could find even more inspiration, and he might launch a new shojo series set in college. This can help him broaden his horizons, since not every manga reader is in high school.
4 Don’t Toy With Me, Ms. Nagatoro! Could Show A More Grown-Up Hayase Nagatoro In College
Don’t Toy With Me, Ms. Nagatoro! is a fairly conventional high school comedy series, with a minor twist: the meek hero, Naoto Hachioji, is the target of Hayase Nagatoro’s constant teasing. At first, it seems like petty bullying, but ultimately, this is simply how Hayase expresses her interest in people, and she really does mean well.
Over the course of this series, Hayase and Naoto become friends and allies, and it would be intriguing to see what their college selves are like in an OVA. By the time Hayase is 19 or 20 years old, is she still goofing off and acting like a sadodere? Or has she matured into something else entirely? Fans can only wonder.
3 We Never Learn Could Explore The Girls’ College Lives
We Never Learn is a PG-rated harem series, and, instead of excessive fan service, it focuses on each girl’s mission to conquer their weakest subject in school while Nariyuki Yuiga tutors them all. He wishes these girls the best, and they make remarkable progress.
Each girl has the future in mind, and they all want to get a degree in their worst academic fields, such as math or literature. A charming OVA or two could show the fruits of their labors, since the original anime never got a chance to do so.
2 Nisekoi Could Show How Much Raku & Chitoge Have Grown Up
Nisekoi is another love-comedy series set in high school, and the premise begins with a false relationship between the ordinary fellow Raku Ichijo and the fierce tsundere Chitoge Kirisaki. Soon enough, a few more girls arrive, and they all want Raku for themselves.
The original manga finished the story, but the anime didn’t, and it would be fascinating to see how everyone is doing in an OVA set in college. Perhaps by then, Chitoge has cooled off her hot temper, and Raku has become a true gentleman who’s honest and confident about his love life.
1 Fruits Basket Deserves Some Extra Story Time
Fruits Basket is a romance drama series centered around the selfless and kind Tohru Honda and her quest to save the Sohma family members from their burdensome curse and their personal baggage. It’s not easy, but Tohru gives it her all, and she wins the heart of the male tsundere Kyo Sohma.
Not all scenes of Fruits Basket take place in high school, but some do, and Tohru’s adventure doesn’t have to end there. Since the main series resolved all the drama, a charming comedy OVA could show the easygoing Tohru Honda being exposed to the exciting and endless possibilities of college life, with Kyo by her side. What fresh adventures await?
