10 Evil Anime Objects That Corrupted Their Users

From swords that imbue their wielders with an insatiable bloodlust to cursed objects that possess and mind control those who come into contact with them, anime is full of items that corrupt characters and turn them onto the path of evil.

While some characters can resist the temptation or make deals with whatever attempts to control them, each is influenced by the power of these cursed items. Whether or not these items succeeded in fully turning the characters unlucky enough to bond with them evil, some characters were affected enough to still stick out in the minds of anime fans.


10 The Demon Sword, Saika, Possesses Anri Sonohara (Durarara!!)

The demonic sword known as Saika or “the slasher” can place its victims under a form of mind control simply by cutting them. However, Saika is unable to work on its own and requires a human to wield it. During Durarara!!, Anri Sonohara becomes the unlucky soul cursed to wield Saika. Saika’s user eventually is driven insane by the cursed sword. Anri inherited the blade from her mother, Sayaka, and though she does not succumb to complete corruption, Saika’s power leads Anri to create an army of mind-controlled victims.

9 Hyakkimaru Faces Off With The Possessed Weilder Of A Demon Sword (Dororo)

Another demon sword is featured in Dororo. Hyakkimaru must face off with the object, Nihil, and its possessed user, Tanosuke. Tanosuke was a kind soldier who was corrupted by the blade and turned into a blood-thirsty husk of his former self. He is compelled by the sword to kill innocent people, something unthinkable for the real Tanosuke. In the 2019 version of Dororo, Hyakkimaru kills Tanosuke and destroys Nihil to regain his ears, which were stolen from him by the curse his father brought upon him.

8 Gai’s Mother Is Unable To Handle The Lesser Shiryu’s Blood Lust (Sword Gai)

It is well known that a demon sword in possession of anyone other than the protagonist never bodes well, and for many anime, the ensuing tragedy serves as motivation for the protagonist’s success. Such is the case with Gai Ogata of Sword Gai. Gai wields the cursed sword Shiryu, an item that sent his mother into a murderous rage that could only be stopped by her death. Throughout the series, Gai struggles to maintain his humanity and fight the Busoma, or those corrupted by their swords.

7 The Bane Stone Turns Yomi Into An Evil Spirit (Ga-Rei: Zero)

In the animated prequel to the manga Ga-ReiGa-Rei: Zero, protagonist Kagura Tsuchimiya’s best friend, Yomi Isayama, is turned evil by the power of the Bane Stone (also known as the sesshoseki). While Yomi starts out as grateful, respectful, and dutiful, when her father is killed, she vows to exact revenge. This leads her to become seriously wounded. The ensuing anguish of her powerlessness causes her to become corrupted by the sesshoseki and become a destructive and evil spirit. Only Kagura, her once best friend, can stop her.

6 Eating A Finger Causes Yuji To Be Possessed By The Powerful Sukuna (Jujutsu Kaisen)

Yuji Itadori of Jujutsu Kaisen finds himself in hot water when he accidentally eats the finger of the famed “King of Curses,” Ryomen Sukuna. While Itadori has yet to be fully corrupted by Sukuna, there are moments throughout the manga and anime during which Yuji must swap places with Sukuna, allowing Sukuna to control his body.

During “Fearsome Womb, Part 2,” Sukuna even rips the heart from the body Yuji and Sukuna share. Eventually, the two make a deal, allowing the bond between Sukuna and Yuji to be more manageable.

5 The Stone Mask Turns People Into Bloodlusting Vampires (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)

While on an archaeological expedition, Baron Zeppeli and his father come across a mysterious mask – one that eventually finds its way into the hands of the Jostar family and, ultimately, the notorious villain, Dio Brando. The stone mask latches onto its victims’ faces and turns them into bloodthirsty vampires. For some, like Baron Zeppeli’s father, the power and corruption of the mask is enough to turn them evil. However, for those like Dio who are already both brilliant and evil, it allows them to reach new heights and achieve their nefarious goals.

4 The Millenium Ring Turns Bakura Into Yami Bakura (Yu-Gi-Oh!)

While both Yugi Muto and Ryou Bakura find Millenium Items and are often possessed by ancient spirits, only Bakura seems to be dragged into the darkness. When Zorc Necrophades, whose soul is trapped within the Millenium Ring, takes over Bakura’s body, they become Yami Bakura, a main villain in the original Yu-Gi-Oh! plotline.

While Yami Yugi, possessed by the spirit of Pharaoh Atem, does commit atrocities, punishing those who bullied Yugi with a “Shadow Game,” Yugi does not lose himself to the spirit in the same way Bakura does with Yami Bakura.

3 Finders Of The Monkey’s Paw Find Its Power Too Much To Handle (xxxHolic)

Cursed objects and people can be found across CLAMP’s xxxHolic. One such item is the infamous monkey’s paw, based on W.W. Jacob’s short story of the same name. The monkey’s paw will grant the user five wishes, but they come at a terrible price. The paw’s user does not become mind-controlled or possessed. Rather, the user is corrupted by power and fear. In Episode 18 of the series, a student finds the paw and makes greater and greater wishes – regardless of the consequences (including someone’s death) – until she wishes for her own demise.

2 Light Yagami Is Turned Evil By The Power And Responsibility Of The Death Note (Death Note)

Light Yagami, brilliant high school student and finder of the Death Note, begins his quest to destroy evil in the world with good intentions. However, the greatness of the Death Note’s power is too much for even Light to handle, and he becomes antihero-turned-villain by the end. As his alter ego, Kira, Light begins to justify more and more killings to both cover his tracks and keep his sadistic game going, including those of Naomi, Kiyomi, and L. Eventually, this constant compromise of morality leads to complete corruption.

1 The Faceless Buddha Corrupts The Soul Of Its Carver (Dororo)

A more unconventional case of corruption is the story of Okaka, the spirit of a stone carver whose faceless Buddha statue harbors an evil entity. During life, Okaka couldn’t keep up with the demands for fierce-looking Buddha statues, since the carver specialized in kind-faced statues. Okaka died before ever overcoming this block. An evil spirit then inhabited the unfinished, faceless statue and brought Okaka back to bring it sacrifices. The faceless statue manipulates and controls Okaka, corrupting the carver’s spirit through servitude.
