Disney might be behind the times for some things, but at least they make some really pretty movies that give joy to multiple generations of fans. In recent years, they have also decided to start adding interesting little plot twists to get a little closer to breaking their own molds. They even go so far as to mock themselves nowadays in ways that almost always get a good chuckle.
It’s not every time that Disney comes up with a new great plot twist, but some plot twists of the past decade have been phenomenal and have gotten high praise from fans.
10 Brave Was About Building Familial Relationships
With how intense Disney is at pretending to make strong female characters, fans originally didn’t have much hope for Brave’s protagonist Merida. The movie itself even leads up to the viewers assuming that eventually she is going to fall in love with one of the suitors and they’re going to solve the magical curse Merida accidentally put on her mother.
Instead, it was about the importance of understanding and making time for individuals in the family, and how even broken relationships can be bonded with enough effort on both parts. It was a pleasant surprise to fans.
9 Wreck-It Ralph Shows That A Job Doesn’t Define Someone
When it came out that Disney was doing a movie from the point of view of a villain character, fans were equally split between ecstatic and unsure. Especially when it came out that it was definitely going to be more humorous than not. The Wreck-it-Ralph trailers didn’t give a whole lot as to what exactly was going to be happening with the movie either, which made it all the more confusing going into it.
However, the whole point about the movie was overcoming perceptions of a person and judging them based on their character, not on their profession. Just because someone has a dangerous or dirty job doesn’t mean that they should be treated any differently.
8 Frozen Was For Family
Frozen set in motion a fascinating new trend that really took the world by storm. The original movie was clearly not fathomed to get as big as it did based on the background quality compared to the rest of the movie, and the lack of intense marketing beforehand.
The second Hans appeared on screen, he gave a skeevy feeling to viewers, but they were willing to accept it based on every other movie to unfold. Then it became clear that he was going to betray Anna, and the thought shifted to yet another potential love interest in Kristoff. Instead, true love was made to be more than just romantic interest in this one, showing that the love for family is just as valid as love for a significant other, if not more.
7 Maleficent Is Still The Best Revamp Of A Classic Story
Maleficent never tried too hard to be a redo of Sleeping Beauty. It is even pretty easy to forget that is a thing at all during the movie, and especially in the sequel as it takes place from a different point of view. It only took bits and pieces from the source materials and made its own world and story in a fascinating and engaging new way.
It was a movie with a ton of character growth from everyone involved and had a lot of unique ideas. The visuals were gorgeous, the backstory was wonderful, and for once the princess got to go live in her enchanted fairy tale instead of being forced to stay in a castle with a prince she just met.
6 Big Hero 6 Didn’t Pull Punches
There have been plenty of Disney movies where characters died off-screen, or family members died before the beginning of the movie. Big Hero 6 decided that wasn’t heart-wrenching enough and killed not just one but two characters within the span of the movie itself.
They did that after making sure that viewers were thoroughly invested in their characterizations and it was a shock when they didn’t somehow magically get away. At least it’s clear that one manages to come back, but not after some serious gut punches.
5 Inside Out Showed What It’s Like To Live With Mental Health Issues
A lot of effort and love went into Inside Out and it took from a lot of very real psychological sources to get to where it was.
The movie itself was a fascinating and unique look into the inner workings of a child’s mind in a way that wasn’t too horrible and forced as it shifted between perceptions.
4 Zootopia, Where Some Choices Are Right & Some Are Moral
Zootopia looked like it was trying to be a movie about how one should always chase their dreams, no matter how much it seems like the world is against them. Instead, it accurately showed off the extremes of prejudice and how sometimes doing what’s right by a moral standpoint and what society thinks is right is not always one and the same.
It’s not good to try and categorize someone based on what they look like or where they come from. Instead, their actions should speak for them. The movie is also there to show how listening to your heart, no matter how much the world is saying otherwise, is always going to be a better option than caving in to peer pressure.
3 Incredibles 2 Came Out Of Left Field
The much-anticipated sequel to cult-classic Incredibles was definitely worth the wait. They did excellent work in hiding exactly what the movie was going to be about when hyping it up.
However, just about nobody could have predicted the twist where the guy claiming to be so supportive was actually supportive. Everything was leading up for a different shoe to drop and instead, it flung itself backward and reminded viewers that it isn’t worth judging anyone or anything at face value.
2 Moana Really Did It Herself
Moana really pushed the fact that she wasn’t going to have a love interest, that they had real Polynesian actors playing the roles, and that Hamilton writer Lin Manuel-Miranda was doing the songwriting for it. Though the movie also made it seem like it wasn’t actually about her and was instead about Maoi and helping him. Which, would have left fans annoyed that she could have totally done it herself, why did she need a man to do it for her?
Except, it didn’t. Maoi bailed, and Moana used what she had learned throughout the movie to solve the problem by herself. No magical powers, nothing more special than the entire ocean and some personal work.
1 Toy Story 4 Is Finally The End
Toy Story is highly regarded as the master of sequels. Every movie feels like a logical progression from the one before and still feels part of the world it has set up for itself. It’s also well-known for tear-jerking plotlines and intense friendships, but at least the dynamic duo of Buzz and Woody is a constant.
So when the movie twists and ends with them going their separate ways, it hurt. A whole childhood was finally over, but it was done so satisfyingly well that it worked out.
