It’s safe to say that any story with a good betrayal will get viewers invested more than anything else. People love to have some kind of reason to continue watching a show—something that makes them come back several times in a row.
Introducing a character who was secretly evil will automatically grab plenty of viewers. They’ll yell at the screen not to trust the character, or wonder when the character will get theirs for betraying the protagonists. In anime, double agents aren’t as easy to come by, but when fans learn a character they thought was good was actually evil, they remember it as much as any other plot twist in the story.
10 Aizen Betrayed All Of His Allies To Reach His Goal (Bleach)
Aizen was one of the most legendary betrayals in shonen anime history. Few Bleach fans saw it coming because the character was so unassuming. He didn’t stick out as especially evil when he was first introduced, but by the time everyone realized who he was, he had already killed the Central 46 and escaped to an entirely different world. Aizen remained one step ahead of the main characters for the entire series, betraying everyone who believed in him and even attacking the one person who believed in him the most for the sake of reaching his goals. The only reason he was defeated at all was he was simply outpowered at the end.
9 The Digimon Emperor Pretended To Be Friends With The Digidestined While Enslaving The Digital World (Digimon Adventure 02)
The Digimon Emperor was the first main villain the cast of Digimon Adventure 02 ran into. He pretended to be friendly with the team when he was first introduced playing soccer with them, making it seem like he was just a talented genius both in grades and in soccer. He seemed like a decent sort until they realized he was actually the Digimon Emperor, causing problems all over the Digital World with his incredible cruelty, mostly amplified because of the Dark Seed inside of him. He does snap out of it after he loses his own Digimon, but that’s only after a third of the series is finished.
8 Sideways Pretended To Be An Autobot But Worked For The Decepticons And Unicron (Transformers: Armada)
Sideways is the rare case of being a double-double agent. He makes his first appearance helping out Hot Shot against Scavenger. Though Hot Shot doesn’t trust him at first, it doesn’t take long before they become close friends. Sideways betrayed Hot Shot only a single episode later though, as Hot Shot nearly gave up the powerful Star Saber to save a kidnapped Sideways from the Decepticons. But what makes him a double-double agent is that in reality he served Unicron, not the Decepticons, proving he had no loyalty to anyone.
7 Kayaba Akihiko Lead One Of The Biggest Guilds In Sword Art Online After Trapping Them In The Game (Sword Art Online)
Akihiko pretended to be just another person trapped within the game of Sword Art Online for the first half of the original series. As a member of the most powerful guild in the game, he was able to watch as the other players struggled to defeat the level bosses.
It was only as they fought one of the final bosses in the game that Kirito managed to figure out exactly who “Heathcliff” was, connecting the dots by acknowledging that anyone who would trap everyone in a video game would want to play with everyone else, too.
6 Kabuto Betrayed The Hidden Leaf To Work With Orochimaru (Naruto)
Kabuto was one of the first genin ninja that actually tried to help Naruto and the others. That made it all the more surprising when he was revealed to actually be a member of Orochimaru’s Hidden Sound Village group. Kabuto abandoned Konoha Village fairly early on and spent the rest of the series working against them and helping Orochimaru with his mission. He also attempted to work with the members of Akatsuki, but even then he was still just feeding information back to Orochimaru.
5 Malty Melromarc Robbed Naofumi And Tried To Ruin His Life (The Rising Of The Shield Hero)
Malty was the only ally Naofumi had early in the series. He believed he had one stalwart companion, but in the end Malty not only robs him of everything he has, but accuses him of far worse. This turns the entire kingdom against him, leaving him broke and alone in a kingdom that turns on him. Though Malty would join other groups, each time she tries to bring them down, seemingly for no other reason than being an awful person.
4 Char Aznable Worked With The AEUG Before Returning To The Neo-Zeon (Mobile Suit Gundam)
Char Aznable was more of a double agent within his own organization, serving his own ends. He joined the Zeon forces for the express purpose of getting revenge against the people who destroyed his life as a child. He betrays Garma the first chance he gets and gets them killed as well. But if that’s not bad enough, he would eventually go on to work alongside the good guys in the Anti-Earth United Government.
He was on the straight and narrow for a time, but eventually went right back to the Neo-Zeon forces, this time leading them in an attempt to wipe out Earth and force humanity out into space.
3 William Vangeance Had Another Power In Him That Led A Group Attacking Clover Kingdom (Black Clover)
William Vangeance is the Captain of the Golden Dawn, the strongest Magic Knight guild. With his incredible power, it’s not a surprise he’s led his guild into being the strongest…but he’s also hiding a secret. He’s been allowing the ancient elf Licht to take control of his body and operate the terrorist group known as the Eye of the Midnight Sun. The first half of Black Clover features Licht making appearances throughout the series using Vangeance’s body, as William feels like he owes Licht for saving his life when he was young.
2 Kaworu Nagisa Wanted To Wipe Out Humanity After Pretending To Be A Pilot (Neon Genesis Evangelion)
This one’s a bit more complex than most examples. Strictly speaking, Kaworu was “evil” in that he was a member of the Angels. He joined up with Shinji and the group as another child capable of piloting an Eva robot. The problem was, he and Shinji became incredibly close during Kaworu’s mission. He had absolute plans to try and shut down NERV for good, and wouldn’t have had any problem wiping out all of humanity…except he liked Shinji too much to actually carry out his plan.
1 Rei Shingetsu Pretended To Be Yuma’s Friend To Split Him And Astral Apart (Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL)
Like most Yu-Gi-Oh storylines, ZEXAL was largely happy in the first few episodes, but the more the story developed, the more serious it got. Eventually Yuma and Astral were defending entire realms from people like Rei. Rei tried to pop in and pretend to be the close friend of Yuma, but in reality his goal was to split Yuma and Astral apart to make it easier to destroy the Astral World.
He wasn’t actually successful though, and after he was beaten once he even released the god of the Barian World Don Thousand to get the power necessary to defeat Astral and Yuma. Instead, he wound up being taken over so Don Thousand could restore his own full power. Fortunately, Astral eventually revived Vector in a purified form later on.
