Sports anime is always popular, but in recent years, the sports anime Haikyu!! has taken the world by storm. The series about high school students who play volleyball is not just one of the most popular sports anime but is one of the most popular anime in general.
When there aren’t new episodes for fans to consume, it can be hard for fans to get their volleyball fix. Luckily for fans of sports anime, there are plenty of other characters from other anime who play volleyball as well. Haikyu!! offers one of the best representations of volleyball in anime, but it’s definitely not the first or only time volleyball features in an anime.

“The Beach” is a beloved episode in Avatar: The Last Airbender. It’s a chance for fans to get a deeper understanding of the series antagonists, and it shows that the characters aren’t simply villains. Fans also get to see the characters have fun at the beach playing a game of volleyball. Ty-Lee’s talents as an acrobat are especially useful as she dominates the other team. The random teenagers they play against didn’t stand a chance against the combined talents of Ty-Lee and her friends.
9 Haruka Oozora Falls In Love With Beach Volleyball (Harukana Receive)
Instead of playing in a gym, this volleyball series takes place on the beach. Haruka moves to Okinawa to live with her cousin and grandmother. While there, she meets some girls playing beach volleyball. Even though she loses, she falls in love with the sport. The rules of beach volleyball are a little different, but fans of Haikyu!! will definitely enjoy watching Haruka and Kanata grow as volleyball players.
8 Maki Is An Airhead But A Great Volleyball Player (Minami-ke)
Minami-ke is an anime about three sisters as they go about their daily lives. This includes attending school with their classmate Maki who is a member of the volleyball club. She’s a bit of an airhead, but that doesn’t stop her from being a strong volleyball player.
She’s also incredibly loyal to the other members of the volleyball club. When Hosaka wants to get Haruka to join the boy’s volleyball team as a manager, Maki is quick to help. She is a little too quick to offer her help as she later learns Hosaka doesn’t have the best reason for wanting Haruka as the manager.
7 Akane Hino Is A One-Woman Team (Glitter Force)
Smile Pretty Cure! (Glitter Force in the English dub), is a magical girl series about five girls given the task to protect the world. Akane (Kelsey in the dub) is a member of Glitter Force but still finds time to kick butt in volleyball. She practically plays every position on the court and is able to serve, receive, and spike perfectly. Her abilities are leagues above the other members of the team, especially Miyuki (Emily) who takes a ball to the face.
6 Kimichika Haijima Is An Expert Setter (2.43: Seiin High School Boys Volleyball Team)
Seiin High School Boys Volleyball Team has a lot in common with Haikyu!!. It is a sports anime about a boys’ volleyball team, and one of the main characters is a somewhat cold high-school freshman. Kimichika is the team’s setter, who is given the moniker of genius because of how talented he is. He has a great love for volleyball and is incredibly driven to improve. It’s no wonder he is one of the best players in his prefecture.
5 Shinobu Kawanishi Drives Tanks and Rules The Court (Girls Und Panzer)
Girls Und Panzer is an unusual anime about girls whose school elective is the art of fighting tanks. Not only is Shinobu a tank driver for the Duck Team, but she is also a member of the girl’s varsity volleyball team.
She is so dedicated to her volleyball team, she wears her uniform during tank practice, and she even writes a note on the outside of her tank stating that her volleyball team is looking for new members.
4 Yuni Kuroba Is Skilled Even Without Practice (2.43: Seiin High School Boys Volleyball Team)
Yuni is his team’s outside hitter and ace. Even though Yuni says he doesn’t play much volleyball, his skills are top-notch compared to the other members of the team. His spikes are powerful, and his receives are perfectly aimed. When Kimichika starts practicing by himself, Yuni is the first of the team to join him. When the rest of the team starts practicing, he helps Kimichika teach the others how to hone their skills.
3 Kanata Higa Is Short But Talented (Harukana Receive)
Kanata is shy compared to the other characters in the series. She is also at a huge disadvantage because of her height, which is one of the reasons why she leaves her original team. She also leaves her partnership with Ayasa because of the trauma of her parents’ deaths. Although she lacks height advantage, she is skilled as a beach volleyball player and perfectly assists Haruka as they play together. Her development as a volleyball player helps her grow out of her timid nature.
2 Mimi Hijiri Brings Her School’s Team Back To Life (Attack On Tomorrow)
When the coach leaves and a member of the team tragically dies, the volleyball team is disbanded. During Mimi Hijiri’s last year, she decides to revitalize the team so she and her friends can spend their last year of high school playing volleyball. Mimi is not only a skilled volleyball player but a skilled leader. The team constantly loses, but thanks to her determination and training, they eventually become the most highly recognized team at their high school.
1 Kagome Is A Surprising Skilled Athlete (Inuyasha)
In the anime series Inuyasha, Kagome spends most of her time in the Feudal Era fighting demons and gathering Shikon Jewel shards with her friends. Even with the fate of the world on her plate, she still has time to go back to the present and attend school and play sports. All that running around in the past significantly helps her when she plays a game of volleyball. She is the best on the court, and she probably would have led her team to victory if Inuyasha hadn’t mistaken the volleyball for an enemy and destroyed it.
