The Guardians of the Galaxy have had a fairly stable roster in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, they have been known to bring on a few additions here and there in the comics. Would any notable Marvel anti-heroes be worthy of being called a Guardian of the Galaxy?
The idea isn’t as unlikely as it may seem. Star-Lord is a famous outlaw, Gamora is a trained assassin, Rocket Racoon & Groot are mercenaries, and Drax is on a mission of vengeance. An anti-hero or two wouldn’t be out of place, but the Guardians are more of a family than a superhero team, and they won’t let just anyone join. Only a select few would be deemed worthy.
10 The Winter Soldier Needs A Mission & A Family
The Winter Soldier is a bit of a lone wolf but has also been an incredible team player. He was like a brother to Captain America and even took up the shield when everyone thought Steve Rogers was dead. And with his history as a HYDRA agent, he’s certainly up to the task of taking down space criminals.
With how much he’s been used and then discarded, he could use a bit of stability and a bit of family to even him out. Guns are Star-Lord’s thing, though, so there might be some conflict on that front.
9 Venom Could Be The Space Monster The Guardians Didn’t Know They Needed
While Eddie Brock might not be entirely comfortable with the idea of going on adventures in space, at least his other half would feel right at home there. Eddie might need some time away, though, what with all the symbiote and spider-related drama on Earth.
The Guardians might take him on as Eddie Brock, a displaced man from Earth attached to a murderous alien psychopath. Star-Lord would buy it. But when that psychopathic alien becomes the dominant personality, he might just get blown out of an airlock.
8 The Ghost Rider Would Compliment Drax’s Spirit Of Vengeance
The flaming skull would certainly weird Star-Lord out, but Rocket would probably think it’s cool. Every iteration of Ghost Rider could do the job of a Guardian of the Galaxy. He’s got the edge, the power, and the swagger to take out even the most hardened galactic enforcer.
Gamora would find a friend in the tortured soul of Ghost Rider, and Drax would have an ally in his mission of vengeance against Thanos. Just keep Groot away when he lights up.
7 The Hulk Would Create An Interesting Team Dynamic
The Hulk might seem like an odd entry in a list of anti-heroes. It’s true, he was an early member of The Avengers, and Bruce Banner is onboard with the whole “saving the world” concept. But while The Guardians would need to kidnap Bruce Banner, the Hulk would be all too happy to unleash his fury on a platoon of Kree warriors.
Even the Hulk might be wary of heading into space, though, as it didn’t work out so well for him last time. But, at least with the Guardians, he wouldn’t be forced to fight the Silver Surfer alone.
6 Black Cat, For When The Guardians Need To Get Sneaky
Sometimes the Guardians get down to some thievery, and few people on Earth are better at second-story work than Spider-Man’s ally and on-again-off-again love interest. Black Cat is the perfect cat burglar, and she’s not shy about using tech either. When the job calls for stealth, she’s a front-liner.
On the other hand, Black Cat tends to play the vixen, which would undoubtedly earn her Star-Lord’s nomination. Hopefully, Gamora doesn’t get jealous— especially for Black Cat’s sake, as that’s a fight that would not go in her favor on any front.
5 Cable Might Take Over As Team Leader
Who better to join a band of misfit anti-heroes than the man who led the first team of X-Men anti-heroes? Cable led X-Force for years. Even without psionic powers that would put Mantis to shame, Cable has the all-around fighting expertise to cover any role the team needs.
Cable does tend to play things close to the vest, though, and would most likely be out in space to accomplish his own secret mission. But the Guardians of the Galaxy would serve as the perfect vehicle to move him around, and he could teach them a thing or two along the way.
4 Deathlok Would Get Along With Rocket
Most anti-heroes would be full-blown heroes if people with ulterior motives did not abuse them. Rocket can definitely relate. Deathlok technology is often used to reanimate a dead person into a killing machine. Although Marvel has used it numerous times, it gets its name from the character Deathlok.
Three individuals have taken the mantle of Deathlok, and all of them were taken advantage of or abused. A team of mercenaries who stick it to the galactic “man” would be right up their ally.
3 Elektra Would Add Another Murderous Assassin To The Roster
A ninja does their best work while acting as lone wolves. But Elektra has never been good at being alone. Ever since her father died, Elektra Natchios has jumped from one bad relationship to another. The Hand used her to assassinate their enemies, and the Kingpin did the same. Both brainwashed her and, eventually, left her for dead.
She may not admit it, but Elektra needs a place to belong. Daredevil tried to reform her from her criminal ways, but maybe what she needs is a group of outcasts who have already embraced one murderous assassin.
2 Wolverine Is The Father Figure The Guardians Need
Wolverine’s had some pretty out-there walkabouts in his long life. He’s also been a longtime member of a pretty close-knit team. The family dynamic isn’t just one he could fit well in, it’s something that he craves. Star-Lord might even latch onto Logan as the father figure he always wanted.
When it comes to getting the job done, Wolverine is the best there is at what he does. He could even teach Gamora and Drax a thing or two— if they can handle him.
1 Deadpool Is A Lot Like Star-Lord, Which Is Why It Could Work
As much as the Guardians of the Galaxy would love to be called heroes, they often operate as mercenaries. Deadpool can keep up with their shenanigans while also matching wits with Star-Lord.
He might come off a little hardcore for most of the Guardians’ tastes. Gamora has a little too much honor to put up with his wisecracking, but Rocket and Star-Lord would likely be interested in his skillset. Hopefully, they don’t bite off more than they can chew. As Cable can attest, Deadpool doesn’t always make the best teammate.
