10 Anime Villains With Soft Spots

[ad_1]

The world of anime features some of the scariest, coolest, and strongest villains of all time, and many of them are renowned for being cold, selfish, ambitious, and cruel, not to mention their manipulative and deceptive ways. But not all villains have a heart of stone. Some of them find room for someone else in their heart and develop a soft spot for them.

This can make a villain even more compelling and save them from being a cartoony, one-dimensional antagonist who just wants to kill and destroy things. If a villain has someone near and dear to them, it proves that sometimes, villainy is defined not by what’s in the heart, but by the villain’s actions and beliefs. A handful of anime villains have a genuine caring side for someone in their lives.

10 All For One Dotes On Tomura Shigaraki (My Hero Academia)

Anime My Hero Academia Shigaraki All For One Meeting

The symbol of evil, All For One, is named after his Quirk and his desire for all people to see him as their boss and savior. This mighty villain is known for coldly and ruthlessly hunting heroes and stealing worthy Quirks, and he wants to reshape society in his own image. But he also found room for a certain boy in his schemes.

Unfortunately, All For One’s soft spot for Tomura Shigaraki came with baggage, including manipulation, but All For One’s care does seem genuine on some level. He even encouraged Tomura to learn from his failures, like a twisted father figure.

9 Zeref Dragneel Went To Radical Extremes For His Brother (Fairy Tail)

The dark wizard Zeref Dragneel is only a villain through his actions, and as a person, he’s hardly a villain at all. He is motivated by family, and he longs to resurrect his fallen brother, Natsu. He delved into forbidden research to breach the divide between life and death, and he soon paid for it.

Zeref wandered the world as a cursed immortal being, and he spent this time preparing for his final scheme, including the creation of the Demon Books and the Alvarez Empire. He just wanted his family restored, and that’s a noble enough goal. He finally died in the arms of his lover, Mavis Vermillion.

8 Coyote Starrk’s Best Friend Was Lilynette Gingerbuck (Bleach)

Very few Bleach villains ever had a soft spot for anyone, and foes such as Sosuke Aizen and Ulquiorra Schiffer were truly cold. But among the ten Espadas, there was an exception: Coyote Starrk. He was hardly evil at all. More than anything, he wanted friends, since he couldn’t find any in the Hueco Mundo desert.

Zabuza & Haku Death Scene

Zabuza fought to the end and died beside his dear companion, and it helped that Naruto had just delivered one of his first “talk no jutsu” sessions. Zabuza had had a soft spot for Haku for years, and that allowed him to die happy.

6 Mello Felt Terrible About Matt’s Demise (Death Note)

The villainous Mello was highly competitive and liked to use people, making him difficult to sympathize with when he and Near appeared later in Death Note. For the most part, Mello cared only for himself and his own glory as a Kira hunter, but he did have a soft spot for a fellow named Matt.

Not much of Matt’s life is known, but it’s clear that he and Mello are good friends who trust one another. Matt risked his life to help Mello capture Kiyomi Takada, and when Matt was gunned down, Mello felt a serious pang of guilt, showing just how important Matt had been to him.

The relationship between Guts and Griffith is a complex and ever-changing one with many layers, but it can be still be said that Griffith is an anime villain with a definite soft spot for Guts. Not even Casca, who idolized Griffith, earned a place in his heart the way Guts did.

Griffith was always a selfish schemer, and he only used the Band of the Hawk as a disposable tool. But he did see Guts as his true and dear equal, and he went berserk when Guts left him. Guts is many things to Griffith: a fellow mercenary, obstacle, rival, and friend.

4 Cioccolata Doted On Secco (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)

The icy villain Annie Leonhart was the powerhouse Female Titan, and she and Eren duked it out in the city before she got captured. Annie seems to care not one bit for the lives of anyone around her, and in fact, she’s cynical about the entire world. This led to some tension between her and Reiner Braun early in their mission to Paradis Island.

Still, Annie eventually mended ties with her foster father, Mr. Leonhart, and swore to fulfill her promise to him and protect him. She gradually transitioned from villain to antihero, showing that there is some goodness and hope in her after all.
