10 Anime Villains Who Self-Destructed After Being Defeated

Usually when an anime villain dies, they refuse to go down alone. This almost always results in a suicide attack, where the villain in question self-destructs in an attempt to either kill the hero or inflict as many casualties as they could before dying.

That being said, the intentions behind such a last strike differ. Where some anime villains self-destruct as a tragic final act of defiance against their bitter rivals or fate, others expose themselves to be sore losers who couldn’t accept defeat.

10 Future Diary — Minene Uryuu Blew Herself Up To Breach Eleventh’s Safe

Minene Watches Nishijima Die In Future Diary

When Deus’ game was reduced to the last five competitors, though, Minene forged a temporary alliance with Yuki and Yuno to take down the immoveable John Bacchus.

During the siege of John’s fortress, Minene was heavily injured and saw her lover Masumi Nishijima die. Near death, Minene revealed that she had a bomb that would go off if she died. In her last moments, Minene placed herself at John’s vault door, intending to bring it down via explosion. Unfortunately, it was too impenetrable to destroy.

Whether or not he’s near defeat, Thunder’s attack of choice was always self-harm. 8 Fairy Tail — Tempester Turned Himself Into Poison Gas When Cornered

Tempester Unleashes His Full Power In Fairy Tail

Tempester was known as “The Immortal,” and he showed how he earned this name when he met Fairy Tail. After being defeated by Laxus Dreyar, Tempester admitted that he underestimated his foes before promptly exploding into a cloud of black mist. Said mist was a toxic agent that was lethal to any mage who breathed it.

This, however, wasn’t the end for Tempester. While he did sacrifice one of his many lives to escape, his powers let him rebuild and revive himself in Tartaros’ headquarters. The only thing that could kill Tempester was a single powerful blow that hit all of his cells at once, and this is exactly what Gray Fullbuster did to end him.

7 Full Metal Panic! — Gauron Used His Suicide Gambit To Confess His Love

Gauron Gets The Last Laugh In Full Metal Panic

Ever since he first met him, Gauron had a sick obsession for Sousuke Sagara. Despite what Sousuke and reality said, Gauron was convinced that he and Sousuke were the same and romantically involved. This obviously meant that they were meant to die together, which he tried to do at the end of the first Full Metal Panic!

In the final fight, Gauron activated his Arm Slave’s self-destruct device to blow himself up with Sousuke since he couldn’t kill him fairly. Sousuke escaped and left Gauron to die, but he survived and returned in a bedridden state in the second season. Here, Gauron finally got his death wish fulfilled when he goaded Sousuke into shooting him in cold blood.

Houji Praises Shishio In Rurouni Kenshin

Though he doesn’t have any fighting prowess, Houji was one of the most devoted members of Makoto Shishio’s extremists, the Juppongatana (or The Ten Swords). Houji served as his master’s mouthpiece to the bitter end, believing that if Shishio wasn’t allowed to rule Japan, then no one should. This, of course, meant everyone dying upon Shishio’s death.

When Kenshin Himura killed Shishio, Houji ran to destroy his master’s fortress by overloading its heating systems. Houji’s self-destruction didn’t just fail to kill the heroes, but he survived and was imprisoned afterwards. Houji took his own life and literally followed his master to Hell, where Shishio and his mistress Yumi were waiting for Houji.

Patrick Zala Kills His Own Officer In Gundam SEED

The war between the Earth Alliance and PLANTs was never going to result in a clear victor, but PLANT’s chairman of defense Patrick Zala was not having it. Near Gundam SEED’s end, the Earth Alliance and the rogue Clyne Faction came dangerously close to PLANT’s superweapon, the GENESIS, and this pushed Zala off the edge.

Zala ordered the GENESIS to fire at the approaching forces, even if it meant killing what was left of PLANT’s army (better known as ZAFT). Before Zala could fire the cannon himself, his officers killed him, as they refused to commit mutual destruction to secure a futile victory. Zala was then left to blow up with GENESIS when it was destroyed.

The Major Enjoys The Carnage In Hellsing Ultimate

In brief, Millennium wanted to die. Millennium was formed in 1944 to turn the tide of World War II in Nazi Germany’s favor, but their promised battalion of vampires soldiers was finished too late. Having long outlived their purpose, Millennium attacked London in the 90s to wage the bloodiest war they could before dying.

The Major enabled his army’s death wish, and he ordered everyone to die until no one was left alive. When the Last Battalion was reduced to its barest minimum, The Major gleefully accepted the loss and even allowed Sir Integra Hellsing and Seras Victoria to kill him. The Major may have been beaten, but he died the way he always wanted to.

Semi Perfect Cell About To Self Destruct In Dragon Ball Z

After achieving his Perfect Form, the android Cell was so assured of his perfection that he held the Cell Games under the assumption that he’d easily defeat Earth’s mightiest fighters. This turned out to be false when he faced Gohan, who dominated Cell so much that he tried to blow up the Earth rather than admit defeat to a child.

When Gohan knocked Cell back to Semi-Perfect form, Cell responded by activating a self-destructive attack that would’ve taken Earth with him. Son Goku saved the day when he teleported himself and Cell to King Kai’s Planet, where he exploded but only killed a handful of people. Cell eventually resurrected, only to be properly killed by a vengeful Gohan.

However, this came at a steep price, since he was never in control of Akira’s destructive might. The more time went on, the more Tetsuo lost himself to Akira.

When Kaneda, Col. Shikishima, and the Espers cornered Tetsuo, Akira’s full force broke free and turned him into a grotesque mass of flesh and power. Even if he had no intention of doing so, Tetsuo would’ve self-destructed and destroyed reality because of how out-of-control Akira’s godhood was.
