10 Anime Series That Kids Will Enjoy (But Adults Will Find Boring)

While there are plenty of adult-oriented anime series being produced, anime also has scores of kid-friendly titles lining its proverbial shelves. In fact, a great majority of anime is marketed almost exclusively towards children or teenagers, since they’re a demographic that’s highly likely to have enough free time to partake in anime.

Unfortunately, this does mean that the adult crowd doesn’t have nearly as much variety to look forward to when it comes to anime, so it’s a good thing that some kids’ anime is appealing and entertaining enough for older crowds as well. There are many anime series out there that are best experienced by children, however, and might not be able to sustain the attention of an adult audience for long.

Even though the original manga for Chi’s Sweet Home ran in a seinen magazine, this series is a great watch for kids. The titular Chi is a stray cat who was found by Yohei Yamada, a young boy that a child audience can immediately connect with. The series focuses on Chi’s mischief-making as she explores her new home and meets new animals to become friends with. But no matter what trouble Chi gets into, she knows the Yamadas will accept her back, which is a heartwarming message for younger audiences.

Originally conceptualized as a long-lasting franchise like Doraemon and Pokémon, Yo-kai Watch has successfully established itself as a beloved mixed-media franchise for children. Yo-kai Watch has spawned numerous toys and a handful of video games since it debuted, so it makes sense that both a manga and an anime adaptation have been made. The basic plot revolves around elementary school-aged children befriending Yo-kai that are haunting the city and working with them to solve everyday problems. This franchise is arguably marketed to children and most adults won’t get the same level of enjoyment.

As a franchise, Doraemon has withstood the test of time and become a beloved childhood series for many people worldwide. The series follows the adventures of Doraemon, a time-traveling cat-robot from the 22nd century.

His mission is to assist Nobita Nobi, whose future grandson sent Doraemon back in time to help his grandfather create a better life for his descendants. 7 Hamtaro Is Based On A Japanese Children’s Book Series

Following the antics of various animals is often a great premise for a children’s show and Hamtaro is no exception to this rule. In fact, children’s books are the source material for the Hamtaro anime, so it’s no wonder that this series appeals to kids. Hamtaro features the antics of its eponymous mischievous hamster and his friends, the Ham-Hams. This franchise was especially popular in Japan, where it lasted for nearly 300 episodes. Adults will likely have a hard time staying engaged with Hamtaro’s simplistic plot, even if it is cute.

6 Bananya’s Short Episodes & Charming Characters Are Great For Kids

With episodes that last about three minutes each and a colorful cast, Bananya is an anime that’s easily digestible for young audiences. The series features a new species of tiny cats that live inside banana peels. Most of the action is described by a narrator who explains the banana cats’ motivations while the cats themselves communicate in adorable onomatopoeias. Bananya’s biggest ambition is to bathe in chocolate with all his banana cat friends – an endeavor that most children can likely appreciate.

5 Pretty Cure Has Become A Massive Franchise For Children

Originally released in 2004 under the title Futari wa Pretty Cure, the Pretty Cure franchise has exploded with popularity and boasts 18 different anime titles under its belt. The franchise has also branched out into films, toys, and video games, among other merchandise, making it a behemoth among children’s anime. The series is almost like a direct successor to Sailor Moon with its teenage cast who work with various magical entities to protect Earth. Although this series has niche popularity with some adult crowds, it’s mostly enjoyed by kids.

4 Tokyo Mew Mew Did Well Both In Japan & Overseas

Based on a shojo manga by Reiko Yoshida, the Tokyo Mew Mew anime has done remarkably well both in its home country and with English-language audiences. Tokyo Mew Mew follows 12-year-old Ichigo Momomiya who ends up gaining the ability to transform into Mew Ichigo, a heroic catgirl who must protect Earth from troublesome aliens.

The franchise is still alive and well, with Tokyo Mew Mew New set to premiere in 2022. The basic “good vs. evil” plot is easy for kids to connect with but might not interest adults.

3 Beyblade Was Made To Complement A Children’s Toy Line

Originally a toy line of spinning tops manufactured by Takara Tomy, Beyblade went on to become a moderately popular anime series with a cult following. New Beyblade anime are still being made, with Beyblade Burst being the most recent iteration of the franchise. The anime’s plot is exceptionally easy to follow, as its main premise revolves around elementary school children playing the Beyblade battling top game with each other. Kids will have an easier time connecting with Beyblade‘s premise, especially with an entire toy line behind it to draw them in.

2 Pokémon Has Appealed To Children For Decades

Although it’s true that many adults enjoy the Pokémon franchise, it’s most likely because they were introduced to the video games and anime as children. Like most anime with toy and video game franchises behind them, the premise for Pokémon is easy to understand and its young protagonists are immediately relatable for child audiences. Many adults who love Pokémon today probably appreciated it much more as children and it might be tough for them to sit through the series now that they’re older.

1 Digimon 1999’s Basic Storyline Is Easy For Kids To Engage With

Like Pokémon, Digimon is a franchise that’s been around for decades, and many adults grew up watching the original Digimon anime that was released in 1999. While entries like Digimon Adventure tri. attempted to connect with their older audience, the first anime is an experience that children will appreciate most. Digimon is mostly focused on a monster of the week plot where the young Digidestined need to defeat the villain before they cause too much harm. It’s certainly a nostalgic title for some adults, but not the most interesting.
