The world of Japanese anime is populated with many thousands of diverse characters who can be categorized in all sorts of ways, from their MBTI personality types to their -dere types, such as tsundere or kuudere. But that’s not all. Anime characters can also be described with everyday terms, both positive and negative, from class clown to perfectionist to bully.
Many anime characters hold themselves to a high standard and expect a lot out of themselves and others, and certain anime characters can be described as perfectionists, for better or worse. A perfectionist will push themselves very hard to be the best, and they concern themselves over any and all mistakes or imperfections. These anime perfectionists won’t rest easy until everything is exactly the way it should be.
10 Princess Azula Won’t Accept Second-Best (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
The anime-style action series Avatar: The Last Airbender features a truly terrifying villain, the talented Princess Azula. She is intimidating to her allies and enemies alike due to her ruthless and cruel nature, and she is a perfectionist on top of that.
Azula is Ozai’s favorite, and she can’t stand the idea of letting him down. Even though her incredible firebending moves are nearly perfect, Azula will criticize herself for not being absolutely perfect, and this may ruin her mood. Eventually, Azula cracked under the strain and fell from grace.
9 Levi Ackerman Won’t Tolerate Dust & Dirt (Attack On Titan)
Captain Levi Ackerman quickly established himself as a stern and no-nonsense commander, and he won’t tolerate any goofball behavior or mistakes in the Scouts for any reason. Levi holds everyone to very high standards, including himself, and his subordinates were truly inspired.
Levi is also concerned about cleaning, and he actually made fans laugh out loud with his passion for scrubbing houses to a shine. To Levi, though, it’s no joke, and he’ll make Eren spend all day cleaning if it means making the house spotless.
8 Endeavor Pushed His Son Too Hard To Succeed (My Hero Academia)
Some anime parents are strict and push their kids rather hard to succeed, and at times, it pays off. Other times, though, this intense pressure to be perfect inspires their kids to rebel instead, and this can cause some serious family drama. The Todoroki family is a major example of that.
Endeavor the flame hero failed to surpass All Might, so he entered a Quirk marriage and kept having kids until he got one with the ideal combination of Quirks – Shoto. Then Endeavor pressured Shoto to be perfect and groomed him to be the ultimate weapon. That didn’t turn out quite the way Endeavor intended, however.
7 Misaki Ayuzawa Won’t Stop Working (Maid-Sama!)
It’s important to note that being a workaholic or perfectionist is not always a good thing. In both fiction and in real life, such people aren’t always productive or constructive. Fortunately, some actually are, and that includes the student council president Misaki Ayuzawa.
Misaki shoulders many burdens for her age, and she won’t let anything slide. She’ll push herself to the point of exhaustion to do a perfect job on everything, from studying to student council work and supporting her impoverished mother. She’s not the type to just let things go, and she doesn’t easily forgive mistakes from herself or others.
6 Captain Byakuya Kuchiki Won’t Let Anything Slide (Bleach)
Captain Byakuya Kuchiki was born into the noble Kuchiki family, and ever since his boyhood, he was expected to lead the family someday, which is a huge responsibility. Byakuya took that duty seriously, and he also strictly followed the law. He only made exceptions for the sisters Hisana and Rukia, once for each.
Otherwise, Byakuya is a bit of a perfectionist, being the type to sternly but fairly criticize others for falling short or making mistakes, and he also acts in a dignified and aloof manner. He seems determined to be a model Captain in every way, and he has largely succeeded.
5 Kisho Arima Strives For Perfection (Tokyo Ghoul)
Kisho Arima is the strongest CCG investigator of all, and ever since his teen years, he has been widely recognized for his formidable talent and impeccable work ethic. For Kisho, work is everything, and he calmly but firmly holds himself to incredibly high standards. He sometimes projects this attitude on others too, but he’s not overbearing about it.
Kisho lives up to his reputation time and again, though he is humorless and stern about it. He’ll chide his subordinates for being 0.1 seconds too slow in executing an attack, and only a true perfection would care about that. In fact, most mentors wouldn’t even notice a 0.1-second delay in execution.
4 Kuvira Won’t Do Things Halfway (The Legend Of Korra)
Among all fictional perfectionists, the metalbender Kuvira is among the most successful, since she manages to channel her perfectionist attitude in constructive ways. Instead of wasting time agonizing over tiny details that don’t matter, she expresses her perfectionism by refusing to end her mission before it’s absolutely complete.
More specifically, Kuvira aims to reunite the fractured Earth Kingdom into a centralized empire, and she meticulously made sure to include every last town and territory in her plan with no exceptions. She also pushed herself and her subordinates to be their absolute best, and she has no patience for mistakes, complacency, or idleness.
3 Yuki Sohma’s Mother Demanded Perfection From Her Son (Fruits Basket)
Yuki Sohma is the rat of the zodiac, and a lot is expected of him as a result. Not only must he contend with the emotionally controlling Akito Sohma, but he must also deal with his perfectionist and self-centered mother, who may be known as Mrs. Sohma.
Mrs. Sohma saw her son as a tool and eagerly wanted him to be perfect so she could benefit from him indirectly. Mrs. Sohma had no patience or tolerance for anything that got in the way of Yuki’s growth and influence, which ultimately drove her son away from her. She wanted a perfect son, but what she needed was a son who loved her.
2 Light Yagami Worries About Everything (Death Note)
Being a paranoid perfectionist is what helped Light Yagami escape the clutches of L the super-detective, but it’s also a stressful lifestyle. Still, as Kira, Light can’t afford to make any mistakes or let anything slip by him, so he meticulously considers every angle before he makes a move.
Light had the perfect facade as Soichiro Yagami’s hardworking son, and he thoroughly shielded himself from the police by hiding all traces of his notebook and Kira activities. Then, he launched a plan to set up Kyosuke Higuchi as the new Kira, but not before absolutely everything was in place.
1 Kaguya Shinomiya Has High Standards (Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War)
Kaguya Shinomiya’s perfectionism is expressed in humorous and heartfelt ways, and student council president Miyuki Shirogane has a similar attitude, too. To begin with, Kaguya is from a powerful and wealthy family, and perfection is expected of her as a matter of course. She’s no ordinary girl.
Kaguya is also a naturally meticulous and clever person who will work out all the details before making a plan, and she will panic if even the slightest thing goes wrong. She simply must be right about everything, and that’s what it takes if she intends to win the love war with Miyuki.
