Sometimes an orphaned character can learn that they are less of an orphan than they thought and reunite with their long-lost parents. There are many variations of this story, especially in anime where anything can happen.
Sometimes, the hero grew up believing their adoptive family was their birth family until learning otherwise, but sometimes the hero will grow up as an orphan. The eventual reunion is often a happy occasion, while some heroes were better off without their birth family. In some less severe cases, the hero might just think their missing parent is away on business, or only has this issue with just one of their parents.
10 Angelic Layer: Shuko’s Reasons For Leaving Misaki Differ Between The Manga & Anime
In Angelic Layer, Misaki initially lives with her grandparents before moving in with her aunt. Getting into Angelic Layer turned out to be in her blood, as her long-lost mother, Shuko, is a champion in the game.
Shuko’s exact reasons for leaving Misaki differ between the anime and the manga. She either lost the use of her legs and is trying to find a cure, or she has a severe case of social anxiety disorder. For her part, Misaki believes her mother is just away for work but doesn’t recognize “Shu” as her mother until the end of the series. Anime audiences are given a hint of who she is early on: the first ending song features Shuko watching Misaki on a laptop.
9 Ashita No Nadja: Nadja Spends The Series Looking For Her Lost Mother
In Ashita no Nadja, Nadja grows up believing herself to be an orphan at Applefield Orphanage, until she learns that her mother is still alive. She joins up with a group of performers while searching for her long-lost mother and trying to figure out the story of her past.
It eventually turns out that her mother, Collette, came from a rich family and eloped with a musician. After her husband died in an accident, her family’s retainers sent Nadja to an orphanage and told her mother she had died so she would return home and even remarry. Collette is indeed still alive and Nadja even crosses paths with her before realizing they are mother and daughter.
8 Candy Candy: Terry Reunites With His American Mother
In Candy Candy, Terry is the son of an English duke and an American Broadway actress. He lives with his father while his mother stayed in America. Terry traveled to New York to find her again, only for her to tell him not to visit her to avoid a scandal. Thanks to Candy, however, the two eventually reconcile.
This series also manages to do a variation of this plot using adoptive family. Candy is taken in as a virtual servant by the abusive Leagan family, but her fortunes change when the patriarch of the Ardley Clan, Uncle William, declares Candy to be his foster daughter. Throughout the series, William appears to be a mysterious figure that the audience never sees, but this isn’t the truth at all: he’s actually none other than Candy’s friend Albert, who hid his identity to conceal how young he was.
7 Haré+Guu: Dr. Clive Is Haré’s Long-Lost Father
In Haré+Guu, Haré is very protective of his mother Weda and isn’t too happy with her marrying her love interest, Dr. Clive. Of course, the twist to this plot point is that Dr. Clive is Haré’s long-lost father and he’s actually trying to rekindle his previous relationship with Weda.
Dr. Clive also gets an unusual variation of this story: there is a running joke where he keeps dying and meets up with an old man in the afterlife. It turns out to be his grandfather, who also wants him to reunite with Weda.
6 Lady Georgie: Georgie Must Leave Australia For Europe To Find Her Past
In Lady Georgie, Georgie grew up in Australia with her parents and brothers, or so she thought. When her father dies, his wife reveals she’s actually adopted, causing her to leave the country in search of her real, British parents, with a gold bracelet as her only clue.
It turns out that her real father was a British nobleman who was falsely accused of murder and is likewise searching for her. Not only does he prove himself to be a loving father when they reunite, he’s even shown to care about Georgie’s adoptive brothers. That said, both the manga and anime see her ultimately return to Australia.
5 Kill La Kill: Ryuko Finds Her Mother & Sister While Avenging Her Father
Kill la Kill proves that one’s birth family isn’t necessarily the best familial option. Ryuko Matoi starts the series trying to find out information about her father’s murder, causing her to enroll at Honnouji Academy.
It eventually turns out that the villainous Ragyo Kiryuin is her true mother, and Ryuko’s father faked her death to protect her. This also means Ryuko’s rival, Satsuki, is her long-lost sister who was trying to avenge her this whole time.
4 MÄR: Ginta’s Father’s Body & Soul Are Split Between Two Characters
In MÄR, Ginta finds himself in MÄR Heaven, a world filled with characters patterned off various fairy tales. Granted, thanks to the fairy tale theme, a lot of characters in the series have missing fathers, but Ginta’s father is a complicated case.
His father, Danna, was fatally wounded after being summoned to MÄR Heaven like his son. He was eventually divided between two characters: the King is using his body and his soul is within Babbo. Eventually, he is restored and gets to reunite with his wife and son.
3 Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water: Captain Nemo Is Nadia’s Father
The anime Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water is loosely inspired by Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, so it makes sense that a character named Captain Nemo would prove important to the plot.
Nadia believes herself to be an orphan and works as a circus performer to support herself. While she tries to uncover her past, her life so far causes her to mistrust all adults, especially Nemo, who is none other than her long-lost father. Unfortunately, it will take time for her to acknowledge him as her father, and their reunion will end in sacrifice. Her mother appears to be the leader of the souls within Nadia’s titular Blue Water gem.
2 Sailor Moon: This Happens Quite A Bit With The Moon’s Royal Family
In Sailor Moon, Usagi is technically the biological daughter of the Tsukinos, but a similar situation occurs when she meets Queen Serenity, her original mother back when she was Princess Serenity.
A more typical version of this story, though still complicated, appears with Chibiusa: her mother, Neo Queen Serenity, is trapped in stasis once the Black Moon Clan attacks, so Chibiusa travels back to the past and stays with Usagi’s family. Of course, Usagi turns out to be her mother’s past self. Chibiusa initially returns home once the villains are defeated, but she gets sent back to live with Usagi, anyway, for training purposes.
1 Wedding Peach: Momoko & Yousuke Both Have Missing Parents
In Wedding Peach, Momoko grows up believing that her mother, Sakura, passed on when she was very young. It turns out that she was the angel Celeste, and upon regaining her memories, she returned to the Angel World. In the manga, the villain Altheon takes advantage of this to disguise herself as Momoko’s mother for a trap. In the DX episodes of the anime, it’s eventually shown that Celeste was allowed to return to Momoko and her father.
Momoko’s love interest, Yousuke, had a similar issue with his father, who is the devil Uragano who had also left the family upon regaining his memories. He is killed in the anime, but the manga is more merciful to him, seeing him reunite with his wife and son.
