10 Anime Heroes Who Failed At The Worst Times

[ad_1]

Whether it be the people they’ve saved from disaster or changes that come about in the world itself because of their actions, most of the time anime protagonists spend on-screen is spent making names for themselves or successfully helping others.

More often than not, heroes rise up and do what’s needed in order to save the day. Unfortunately, there have been just as many moments where the heroes fail for one reason or another. Great anime know how to challenge an audience and nothing hurts worse than a hero failing at the worst possible moment.

10 Edward And Alphonse Fail To Realize The Danger Nina’s In Before It’s Too Late (Fullmetal Alchemist)

nina chimera fullmetal alchemist

Any fan familiar with Fullmetal Alchemist will still perfectly remember the tragic tale of Nina and her pet dog, Alexander. Two years after using his own wife as part of a cruel experiment, Shou Tucker uses his young daughter and dog, for fear of losing his alchemy license otherwise.

This is one failure that continues to weigh heavily on Edward for most of the series afterwards, and it’s hard to blame him. He and his brother were staying at the Tucker household and had several chances to catch on, but didn’t due to their childlike naivete.

9 Taiga Fails To Properly Convey Her Feelings To Kitamura (Toradora!)

taiga looking down from toradora

At the beginning of Toradora!, all Taiga wants is for her crush Kitamura to understand how much he means to her and to return her affections. She manages to work up the courage to confess to him, but as she begins, she stumbles over her own words in typical Taiga fashion.

This causes her to spend more time confessing about how much she enjoys Ryuuji’s company instead, leading Kitamura to see the true feelings that she couldn’t understand yet. This is a painful failure at the time for Taiga, as it means that her crush won’t pursue her romantically.

8 Izuku Fails To Stop The League Of Villains From Capturing Bakugo (My Hero Academia)

bakugo kidnapped from my hero academia

During what seems to be a routine training mission in the forest in My Hero Academia, it’s revealed that the League of Villains have ambushed the heroes. Their primary target during all of this chaos is Bakugo, who they want to kidnap to try to convert to the League.

Izuku tries to stop them from doing so, along with a few of his classmates, but they’re ultimately unsuccessful. While Bakugo doesn’t actually possess the capability to turn evil, there’s no guarantee he’d be safe in their clutches forever, making this a worrisome failure on Izuku’s part.

7 Honoka’s First Live Show Fails To Attract The Attention It Needs (Love Live!)

honoka umi and kotori love live

At the start of Love Live! School Idol Project, Honoka, Umi, and Kotori put their absolute heart and souls into their first-ever performance. They spend days advertising beforehand as well as rehearsing and making sure everything is perfect for their debut.

The failure here is that almost no one shows up, save for a number of girls who later end up becoming members themselves. While this is certainly a failure compared to the packed-rows that the trio envisioned on their opening performance, it only drives them to do better moving forward.

6 Maka And Friends Fail To Stop The Kishin’s Re-Awakening (Soul Eater)

The Kishin being reawoken within Soul Eater is the most disastrous event that could take place in Soul Eater. Maka, along with fellow meisters Black Star and Death the Kid, are tasked with stopping its revival at all costs. Fans of the series are aware of just how horrifically they fail to do so. The Kishin is still able to be injected with Black Blood and reawoken, which has the potential to spell ruin for all of Death City.

5 Naruto Fails To Bring Sasuke Back To The Hidden Leaf Village (Naruto)

Naruto is begged by Sakura to bring Sasuke back to the village after he defects, and Naruto promises her that he’ll stop at nothing to make this happen. He’s ultimately wiped out during his fight with Sasuke when he does eventually catch up to him, however. Naruto has to be carried back to the village by Kakashi in an incredibly weakened state, and it’s hard not to feel the weight of this failure alongside him.

4 Homura Fails To Keep Her Promise To Madoka (Madoka Magica)

homura crying from madoka magica

Homura originally becomes a magical girl in Madoka Magica because she makes a personal promise to become strong enough to protect Madoka. However, things take on an entirely new level of personal when, at the end of one particularly tragic timeline, Madoka asks Homura to go back in time and stop her from getting tricked by Kyubey.

This is one promise that she ultimately fails to upkeep every time, though. It’s especially cruel when one remembers that Madoka’s ultimate end is sacrificing herself to save others from the painful end of the system she was trapped within to begin with.

3 Ciel Fails To Prevent Madame Red’s Murder (Black Butler)

Madame Red From Black Butler

Ciel and Sebastian from Black Butler are assigned with discovering who’s behind the Jack the Ripper murder cases. Ciel’s been through a lot despite his young age, and there isn’t much that phases him anymore, but he never could have expected that his aunt was one of the culprits.

She was working together with Grell, a grim reaper. While she tries to take Ciel’s life on his orders, she can’t do so because she truly loves him. He has Sebastian spare her as well, but they can’t stop Grell from deciding to take her life anyway.

2 Light Fails To Establish A New World (Death Note)

Although not exactly a hero, Death Note’s Light Yagami believes that he’s entirely justified in his cruel ways. The entire series basically boils down to him playing a cat-and-mouse game, first with L and then his successors, to see who the world decides is just.

In the end, Light fails to come out as the victor during his final battle against Near and his panicking results in him being shot by Matsuda. While there is the possibility of Light living had he gotten his injuries treated, Ryuk decides that waiting out Light’s lifespan in jail is too boring, and thus he meets his ultimate end.

1 Usagi Fails To Act In Time, Causing Sailor Venus To Be Killed (Sailor Moon)

Sailor Venus Death

Sailor Moon’s titular heroine isn’t exactly known for being on high alert and performing at her best during battles. For a good portion of the show, Usagi is a serious crybaby who lets her emotions cloud her judgment when she should be trying to clear her head and fight.

During her final battle against the Dark Kingdom, Sailor Venus saves her from an attack that would have taken Usagi’s life and ends up sacrificing herself in the process. While Venus is able to be revived in the end, this is still a horrible failure on Sailor Moon’s part, as quicker action could have prevented her death.
