In most anime stories, the hero will defeat their opponents in one way or another. Many audiences expect the series’ lead to prevail and are upset when their expectations are subverted.
However, there are many instances where heroes flagrantly did not deserve their victories. Some examples are reflected in the plot itself, whereas others are not. By analyzing the narrative and practical reasons why certain heroes did not earn their wins, fans gain a fuller understanding of what qualifies as a fulfilling victory instead of what gets contrived to keep the plot going.
10 Deku Made Horrible Decisions When Fighting Muscular (My Hero Academia)
Deku’s fight against Muscular should have resulted in a loss. His opponent murdered dozens of professional heroes, whereas he hadn’t even graduated U.A at the time.
To make matters worse, Deku was forced to keep an eye out for a small child throughout the entire battle. Considering that he had to use One For All at a million percent in order to win, his body should have been blown apart. Although the hero was fighting for the right reason, running would have made much more sense.
9 Spike Deserved His Loss To Appledelhi (Cowboy Bebop)
Appledelhi was a giant of a man and Ed’s biological father. Spike sought to claim a “bounty” against him that didn’t actually exist and refused to listen to reason.
Despite the mercenary’s impeccable form and agility, he vastly underestimated Appledelhi’s raw strength. After suffering a decisive humiliation, Spike learned the truth about his opponent’s “bounty” and the person who had actually commissioned it. Spike deserved the beating he received since he jumped an innocent person solely for the potential of earning some quick money.
8 Luffy Was Unprepared For The Third Round Against Crocodile (One Piece)
After learning about Crocodile’s weakness to water, Luffy brought an entire barrel with him during the civil war for Alabasta. He used it to confront the Warlord and nearly got the best of him, only losing on account of the villain’s devil fruit.
Although badly beaten and severely dehydrated, Luffy pursued Crocodile immediately after recovering and without anything to combat him. He only won a miraculous and undeserved victory since he punched him with bloodied fists. Realistically, Luffy should not have been able to ignore his injuries so easily nor defeat Crocodile with so little fluid.
7 Joseph Defeated Kars Out Of Pure Blind Luck (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)
After becoming the ultimate life form, Kars was essentially invincible. Irritated by how Joseph had defied him, the villain attacked him as soon as he finished transforming.
Eventually, he pursued the hero to a volcano, surviving its temperatures with minimal damage. However, Joseph played off its eruption to punch Kars out of orbit. This wasn’t a plan that Joseph had crafted; instead, he admitted it as a stroke of blind luck. As a result, he was the least deserving JoJo protagonist to succeed in his story.
6 Sasuke Wouldn’t Have Defeated Itachi In A Fair Fight (Naruto)
After years of clamoring for vengeance, it seemed as if Sasuke would finally get what he wanted. He fought and defeated his older brother, Itachi Uchiha, in a climactic battle.
However, there are several reasons why this victory was undeserved. Not only had Itachi been operating in his interest since the beginning, but he was also already suffering from a preexisting illness. Should he have been as eager to kill as his opponent was, the battle would have yielded a different outcome.
5 Gon Beat Hanzo On A Technicality (Hunter X Hunter)
During the final stage of the Hunter Exam, Gon was pitted against Hanzo. Without any formal training in Nen, he was significantly outclassed, and the fight quickly became one-sided.
However, Gon knew that if Hanzo killed him, he would get disqualified from the tournament. As a result, he simply refused to back down regardless of his beatings and prayed that his adversary’s conscience would get the better of him. Gon’s strategy would have gone poorly for him if the battle had occurred in an informal setting (or if Hanzo had been slightly more ruthless).
4 The Straw Hats Deserved Their Loss Against Aokiji (One Piece)
Invigorated by their victory at Skypiea, Luffy and the Straw Hats refused to back down when Aokiji came for Nico Robin. Despite knowing he was a marine admiral, they fought him with every fiber of their being.
The crushing defeat that followed reflected how weak Luffy and his crew actually were in the grand scope of the series’ universe. It also provided an incentive for them to split up in order to get stronger.
3 Baki Should Have Been Obliterated By Oliva (Baki Hanma)
Baki went to Arizona in order to challenge Oliva. He was so reckless about fighting him that he attempted to intervene in a preexisting conflict with Guevara to get his attention.
At first, Oliva took pity on Baki and didn’t want to hurt him. However, Baki provoked him so flagrantly and repeatedly that he had no choice but to respond. Inexplicably, Oliva lost their battle despite his tremendous advantages in physique, practical experience, and durability.
2 Rukia Never Should Have Been Able To Defeat Aaroniero (Bleach)
Aaroniero had an inconceivable number of advantages over Rukia. Not only did he possess the strength of tens of thousands of hollows, but he also manipulated the form of one of her deceased friends. As a result, he controlled the fight on both a physical and psychological level.
This made Rukia’s subsequent victory inexplicable, especially since she wasn’t even one of the Soul Society’s strongest shinigami. Although still succumbing to wounds and overexertion, the young woman never should have been able to defeat her ghastly adversary in the first place.
1 Armin’s Coalition Shouldn’t Have Been Able To Stop Eren (Attack On Titan)
Realistically, the coalition of Eldian and Marleyan forces never should have been able to stop Eren. His command over every deceased titan shifter in existence rendered him as an opponent impossible to defeat.
In the end, Eren explained that he wanted his friends to kill him so that the Eldians would be viewed more favorably by the rest of the world. However, this plan backfired many years later when the surviving population bombarded Paradis until nothing remained. If Eren had actually tried to win, his people would have been better off for it.
