10 Anime Heroes Who Are Hated By The People They Saved

[ad_1]

The hero’s journey is never an easy one. The life of a hero is typically filled with all sorts of ups and downs, but being hated by the people he saves is something All Might never had to worry about when he was helping people… although Endeavour does. Many different heroes seem to suffer from this very problem.

Rarely does the hate appear to be for a justifiable reason like causing too much collateral damage. Most times, it’s for something minor like being too perfect, too good, or having an attitude problem. Perhaps some heroes should reconsider who they save moving forward.

10 The Hidden Leaf’s Hatred Of Naruto (Naruto & Naruto: Shippuden)

Naruto looking tough

Before he was Hokage, Naruto was one of the most hated members of the Hidden Leaf Village. He was regularly looked down upon and despised by adults for being the vessel of the Nine-Tailed Fox that had attacked the village years prior. Learning from the adults, his peers and the other children of the village grew to hate him too.

Growing up, even though Naruto regularly participated in successful missions and saved the village from danger multiple times, the people of the Hidden Leaf village looked down on him. His efforts eventually paid off, but it was a long road of constantly trying to help others before acceptance and praise became the norm.

9 Hajime Nagumo And His Envious Classmates (Arifureta: From Commonplace To World’s Strongest)

Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest

Arifureta‘s title sounds like it would be an epically cool isekai adventure with the classic tropes. But, in reality, Hajime Nagumo went from a bullied kid to a hated hero among his classmates. It started with the bullying, then a classmate tried to kill him, dropping him into the bottom floors of a dungeon so dangerous that no one had been down there before. He had to fight his way to the top to get out.

Yet, even coming back from the assumed dead and saving the very people that intended to let him die before wasn’t enough to help his classmates get over their hatred of him being the better person nor his new, edgy personality.

8 Kyubey, Creator Of Magical Girls’ Cycle Of Pain (Puella Magi Madoka Magica)

Kyubey in Madoka Magica facilitates a never-ending cycle of finding young girls to become magically empowered fighters who defeat witches, witches that were once magical girls. This half-rabbit, half-cat monster picks those who seemed to have a glimmer of hope in their already dark lives because that is what powers the magic. However, losing that hope makes them into the very witches that need to be fought.

While his job as an Incubator is vile, and his emotionless personality annoying, he is still a hero. Kyubey’s presence saves the world from destruction… he just has to make some sacrifices along the way, which makes those he initially saves hate him with a burning passion.

7 Humankind Vs. Demon King Yuri Shibuya (Kyo Kara Maoh)

Kyo Kara Maoh Demon King Yuri Shibuya

He’s constantly doted on and shown to be loved by his attendants and citizens of the Demon Tribe, but almost all of humankind hates Demon King Yuri. When Yuri saves a ship full of humans from pirates, he and his attendants are locked up. When he gives money to an old woman desperate enough to fight in a battle-royale arena for pay, she screams obscenities at him after learning that he’s a demon tribe member.

This continues long into the Kyo Kara Maoh series, showing how even though some humans see his better side, the majority find him to be a terrible devil hiding in sheep’s clothing just waiting for a chance to strike.

6 The World Vs. Lelouch Vi Britannia (Code Geass)

Lelouch Covers His Face In Code Geas

Charles zi Britannia’s warmongering destroyed his son, Lelouch’s, close family, friendships, and peace. This led to Lelouch starting his campaign of rebellion by saving the Japanese people from Britannia’s tyranny.

Over the course of Code Geass, however, he finds himself shifting from the place of the hero to the world’s number one enem – dying at the hands of the hero alter-ego he created, Zero. Lelouch’s legacy as a villain was so great that generations after will be saved from the war-filled life he and his sister, Nunnally, grew up living.

5 The One-Eyed Grim Reaper, Yuu Otosaka (Charlotte)

Yuu Otosaka certainly has his flaws, which come out when he’s seen using his primary ability to take over someone’s body for five seconds to commit some pervy acts or fake a heroic save for the girl he’s crushing on. However, when Yuu’s real power awakens, “Plunder,” allowing him to steal another’s ability, Yuu commits himself to take on the abilities of others worldwide to save them from exploitation and suffering.

The strain causes him to lose all of his memories and makes him a global target of hate from those who don’t know his true purpose. Yuu also earns the dark nickname of “One-Eyed Grim Reaper.” A sad end to the already sad story of Charlotte.

4 Daigo’s Anger And Disgust At Hyakkimaru’s Survival (Dororo)

Hyakkimaru from Dororo was hated by the brother he saved and the father whose territory his sacrificed body parts protected. Hyakkimaru’s body was sacrificed to demons to ensure that the land his father, Kagemitsu Daigo, ruled flourished. As he travels to recollect the missing pieces, his father grows hateful of the son that survived while disaster strikes the lands once more.

Daigo should have been working to fix the underlying issues of the land he owned or consider giving up his position as a feudal lord instead of hating Hyakkimaru. Hyakkimaru’s brother, Tahomaru, also grows to hate him out of jealousy despite Hyakkimaru saving him from demons before.

3 Kaiba’s Blind Hatred Of Yugi Muto (Yu-Gi-Oh!)

seto kaiba yu gi oh header

The Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise has many classic depictions of stuck-up rivals hating on the protagonists, but the most memorable will always be that of Seto Kaiba and Yugi Muto from the original show. Yugi saved Kaiba and his brother several times throughout the many seasons of Yu-Gi-Oh!. However, Kaiba forever hates his rival. Maybe because Yugi is better than him at the game Kaiba practically co-created and certainly brought into the modern spotlight, or maybe it’s because he’s jealous of Yugi’s happiness. It is certain, though, that Kaiba is never getting over his blinding hatred of Yugi that seems to span generations.

2 Nobody’s Favorite Boss, L (Death Note)

L From Death Note Sitting In Signature Position

The first season of Death Note featured L regularly disregarding the nuances of conversational pleasantries expected within a team. L was suspicious of those around him and stated as such even when saying nothing would have been better.

He antagonized his team members to help rout out those who may be too weak-willed for the investigation into Kira. He committed morally questionable forms of confinement to characters like Misa and Light when trying to figure out their involvement in the mysterious murders. Moreover, he crossed the lines of investigation into stalking and harassment of Misa on several occasions.

1 The Infamy Of Naofumi Iwatani (The Rising of the Shield Hero)

Naofumi Is Found Guilty In The Rising Of The Shield Hero

Naofumi Iwatani remains a hated hero in The Rising of the Shield Hero universe, despite saving the Melromarc Queendom from several perils and being proven innocent of his prior convictions. Part of this is due to the prejudice of the Queendom’s former major religion, the Church of the Three Heroes (Spear, Bow, and Sword), but the rest is all rumor and speculation.

Even after saving so many, he can’t seem to rid himself of his own infamy. The rumors got so widespread that heroes from another dimension like L’Arc Berg Sickle and Therese Alexandrite have a low opinion of the Shield Hero before meeting him and even the other summoned heroes of Melromarc hate him.
