Friendships are an important part of every phase of life. No matter what age someone is, they will always crave at least one close friend that they can bond with. Since it’s a generally universal phenomenon, most people are able to connect with anime friendships in both the good times and the bad times. 10 Itsuki & Kaede Fail To Truly See Each Other (Kakegurui)
Itsuki Sumeragi and Kaede Manyuda are initially portrayed as confidantes on the student council in Kakegurui, but after Itsuki loses her seat from a failed gamble with Yumeko Jabami, Kaede’s feelings about her change. He’s the one who recommended her to the student council due to her tenacity, so her loss is a disappointment, and he lets her know directly during a gamble with Yumeko. Itsuki similarly becomes disappointed in Kaede after Yumeko defeats him, and he loses all his gambling spirit. Itsuki and Kaede eventually reconcile, but not before the two of them can see each other’s spirits clearly.
9 Honoka & Ruru Tragically Denied Their Feelings (Kiznaiver)
Although Kiznaiver is a relatively shallow anime, Honoka Maki gets one of the most touching backstories in the entire show. In middle school, Honoka works on a yuri manga with her best friend Ruru. Their work ends up surprisingly popular, but before the story can be completed, both Honoka and Ruru develop feelings for each other. But since Ruru was suffering from terminal kidney disease, Honoka decided not to act on her emotions because the pain of Ruru’s death would be too much to handle. Had Honoka been honest about her feelings, the two could have lived the rest of Ruru’s life peacefully.
8 Ichigo & Zero Two Have A Rocky Relationship (Darling In The Franxx)
Relationships in Darling in the Franxx are infamously complicated, and there’s more than one love triangle amongst the cast. This is exactly the case between Ichigo, Hiro, and Zero Two, with the latter two returning feelings and leaving Ichigo in the cold. Despite this, Ichigo does her best to support Zero Two and Hiro’s relationship, and she briefly gets along with Zero Two. The secrecy and conspiracy behind Zero Two’s origins cause some friction, however, and Ichigo rejects Zero Two again until Zero Two and Hiro prove their love for each other.
7 Shinku & Suigintou Can’t See Eye To Eye (Rozen Maiden)
As the first doll that Rozen made in his quest to create the perfect little girl, Suigintou holds a special attachment to her proverbial father in Rozen Maiden. The prequel anime, Rozen Maiden Ouvertüre, shows Suigintou as originally naïve and dependent on Shinku to teach her how to care for herself.
Suigintou is killed after accidentally involving herself in an Alice Game battle between Shinku and Souseiseki. When Suigintou meets Shinku again, Suigintou denies Shinku’s statements that she is an incomplete doll, turning against her and vowing she will win the Alice Game.
6 The Cast Of Anohana Failed To Mourn Together
Losing a close friend or loved one is a traumatic experience that affects even the most steely-hearted people, and Anohana is a series that masterfully captures that feeling of grief. The key event in Anohana is the accidental death of Meiko “Menma” Honma after a fight broke out amongst their friend group. A lot of emotionally charged events went off at once, including young confessions of love, and losing Menma so suddenly shook the close friends to their core. None of them possessed the maturity to understand how to mourn their friend’s death, and the group drifted apart before being reunited during the events of the anime.
5 Yui & Miaka Had An Unfortunate Falling Out (Fushigi Yuugi)
As longtime friends, it was difficult to watch Yui Hongo reject Miaka Yuuki during the Fushigi Yuugi anime. After arriving in the Universe of the Four Gods novel, Miaka and Yui are separated, and Yui is manipulated by Nakago into believing she was sexually assaulted. He further convinced Yui that Miaka has abandoned her to start a new life in the world of the book. Since Nakago is the one person who seemed to care for Yui after she entered the book, she believed his lies. Yui acts antagonistically toward Miaka until Nakago’s treachery is revealed, leading to the girls making up and re-establishing their bond.
4 Satoko Is Misinterpreting Rika’s Feelings (Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni: Gou)
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni: Gou is a successful reboot of the original Higurashi 2006 series that adds a layer of complexity to its storytelling. Rika Furude was initially the only character who was able to loop back in time to prevent the Hinamizawa murders of 1983, but Gou adds Satoko Hojo to the equation, leading to a story that’s similar and strikingly different to the original series.
Satoko misinterprets Rika’s desperate desire to escape Hinamizawa and go to St. Lucia Academy as a rejection of their friendship. Instead of talking it out, Satoko is looping back in time herself and causing more tragedies in the Hinamizawa of 1983.
3 Kana Rejects Futaba Even Though She Did Nothing Wrong (Persona 5)
As an awkward genius child ahead of her peers, Persona 5‘s Futaba Sakura struggled to make friends in school. One day, she finds a kindred spirit in Kana, who approaches her despite Futaba being bullied by everyone else. During their close friendship, Futaba accidentally discovers that Kana’s parents had been forcing her to participate in questionable activities to fuel their gambling addiction. Kana pushed Futaba away in anger and embarrassment and the two drifted apart. Futaba eventually enlists Joker’s aid to steal Kana’s parents’ hearts and they stop abusing her, leading to Kana and Futaba making up.
2 Bakugo Can’t Understand Midoriya’s Selflessness (My Hero Academia)
At the start of My Hero Academia, it’s hard to believe that Katsuki Bakugo and Izuku Midoriya used to be friends as small children. Bakugo seems to hold nothing but contempt for Midoriya and becomes enraged whenever Midoriya voices his dream to become a hero despite being Quirkless. It turns out that Bakugo’s unable to come to terms with Midoriya’s altruism and, when combined with the fact that Midoriya never developed his own Quirk, Bakugo decided that Midoriya was weak and unfit to stand beside him. The two still share a fierce rivalry but Bakugo is softening his stance over time.
1 Sayaka Pushes Hitomi Away Out Of Shame (Puella Magi Madoka Magica)
Although she initially signed up as a magical girl to save her crush’s life and the lives of others, Sayaka Miki ends up regretting her choice in Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Once Sayaka figures out that the cost of becoming a magical girl was her literal soul, she begins to feel like a monster and can’t handle being close to others. This extends to her crush, Kyosuke Kamijo, and her close friend, Hitomi Shizuku. Hitomi warns Sayaka that she likes Kyosuke as well and plans to confess but wanted to give Sayaka the first chance since they’re friends. Sayaka cannot bring herself to confess and instead falls into jealousy and despair.
