10 Anime Characters With the Weirdest Strengths

[ad_1]

Many anime involve characters who use bizarre and otherworldly powers to fight their enemies and solve problems in their lives. This is especially true among genres such as shonen and seinen, where battles and physical conflict are often core story elements. Some powers in these stories are simple and conventional, such as the ability to throw fireballs or summon weapons.

However, others stand out as especially strange, both in the greater context of anime and in their own universes. Among the hundreds of unique powers found in shows from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure to Law of Ueki, only some stand out as anime’s weirdest creations.

10 Saiyans Turn into Great Apes (Dragon Ball)

Great Ape In Dragon Ball

Long before achieving the iconic Super Saiyan transformation, Dragon Ball‘s Goku transforms into the Great Ape, a form that’s nearly impossible to control. Other members of the Saiyan race later use this transformation, most notably Vegeta.

The more one learns of the Great Ape transformation, the stranger it becomes. A Saiyan’s tail must be intact to transform, but apes — which the form greatly resembles — are defined in the real world partly by their lack of a tail. No matter the age and size of the user, all Great Apes appear to be the same size upon transformation.

9 Yuga’s Navel Laser Has A Nonsensical Drawback (My Hero Academia)

My Hero Academia‘s superpowers, called Quirks, run the gamut from mundane to absurd. Yuga Aoyama’s Quirk, Navel Laser, falls squarely into the latter category. The basic function of this ability is obvious: its user can fire a laser from his navel.

However, further details of Navel Laser have little to do with its basic function. As Yuga was not born with this Quirk, his body suffers ill effects when he uses it. Yuga wears a Sparkle Belt to regulate his Quirk and suffers severe indigestion upon channeling Navel Laser for longer than a moment.

8 Charlotte Cracker Summons Infinite Biscuits (One Piece)

One Piece‘s Devil Fruit grant those who eat them a wide array of powers, from stretching one’s body like rubber to transforming oneself into a giraffe. Charlotte Cracker ate the Bis-Bis Fruit, granting him the power to summon an unlimited quantity of hardtack-like biscuits.

He manipulates these biscuits into puppets and props, which he uses to fight his enemies both head-on and through subterfuge. In addition, Charlotte’s biscuits are an economic advantage, as he gives them to hungry allies and sells them for money.

7 Tsunade’s Body Pathway Derangement Bewilders Opponents (Naruto)

The ninjutsu techniques of the Naruto universe are useful for far more than battle, and an entire category of ninjutsu revolves around healing and manipulating the human body. While most medical ninjutsu heals or otherwise supports a target, some create vicious effects.

Tsunade’s Body Pathway Derangement, for example, uses electricity to rewire a target’s nervous system. If the target tries to move their right hand, they may instead move their left foot. Without masterful knowledge of the human body, opponents are unable to fight back.

6 Tohru’s Saliva Cleans Grime (Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid)

Anime Tohru With Wings Miss Kobayashis Dragon Maid

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is full of dragons who take human appearances. These dragons have a variety of fantastical powers, many of which — fire breath, flight, and super-toughness, among others — are commonly attributed to dragons in fiction.

However, this anime’s dragons also wield a variety of unique powers, such as portal generation and clairvoyance. The most bizarre power in the series, Tohru’s draconic saliva, is mentioned in passing. The eponymous dragon maid claims her saliva can cleanse away “only dirt,” which she exclaims while chewing on a piece of clothing.

5 Kyogai’s Drums Reshuffle His Mansion (Demon Slayer)

The powers of both heroes and villains in the first season of Demon Slayer tend toward the mundane. Most characters content themselves with feats of strength and speed or with using poison to attack their enemies. However, one demon’s powers stand out as peculiar.

Kyogai bears six demonic drums which are embedded into his body. Each drum carries a different effect. They can attack Kyogai’s enemies, teleport them — or himself — within the bounds of the demon’s mansion, or rotate the position of Kyogai’s room within that mansion. This rotation disorients Kyogai’s opponents, leaving them vulnerable to a crippling blow.

4 Carne’s Notorious B.I.G. Awakens Only After He’s Dead (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)

Notorious B.I.G. Golden Wind strongest villain stands

Stand abilities from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure are frequently thought of by anime fans as some of the weirdest anime powers. A Stand is a manifestation of its user’s soul, and the souls of JoJo’s characters are often bizarre. Despite the convoluted mechanics of many Stand abilities, JoJo’s fights often end with a hero punching their enemy into submission.

Carne’s Stand, Notorious B.I.G., only activates once the user himself dies. His Stand infests an airborne plane, attacking anything that moves and devouring it. After being thrown into the ocean along with the plane’s fuselage, Notorious B.I.G. spends years floating around attacking motorboats.

3 Yunpao Converts Electricity Into Sugar (Law of Ueki)

Yunpao turns sugar into lightning.

Law of Ueki begins with a common shonen framework — a heavenly tournament with a wish as a prize — and spins it by giving each combatant an absurd power. The protagonist, Ueki, can turn garbage into trees. This power, unlike many others in the tournament, has the potential to make the world a better place.

Other powers have no such application. Sweet-toothed Yunpao can transform electricity into sugar. He carries a pair of electrodes that allow him to cast lightning over his opponent’s head, which he then turns into sugar snow then back into sizzling electricity.

2 Wei Zhijun’s Blood Teleports Objects (Darker Than Black)

Wei Zhijun

Powers in Darker Than Black belong to Contractors, humans who lose their emotionality and fall under compulsive behavior each time they use their abilities. Darker Than Black‘s powers often carry a balance between occultic and technological motifs, such as the power to possess animals.

Wei Zhijun’s Blood-Induced Matter Transportation replaces subtle contradictions with sheer brutality. His power drives him to spill his own blood, and he can transport matter touching that blood to other locations. Wei uses his power to deadly effect, splattering his enemies with blood and transporting away whole chunks of their bodies.

1 Knuckle Bine’s Hakoware Lends Power To His Foes (Hunter X Hunter)

Hunter X Hunter‘s incredible Nen system is a rational and conditional framework that allows viewers to understand how most heroes and villains would fare if pitted against one another. Even Nen-users with fairly low power can contend with stronger opponents by exchanging some limitations for a narrow-scope increase in effectiveness.

More Nen is always desirable and Knuckle Bine takes advantage of this with his Hakoware, a Nen construct which lends Nen to his opponents. While this construct is active, its host builds a debt at 10% interest on its “borrowed” Nen. When the host’s debt exceeds their available Nen, a different Hakoware attaches to them, draining all their available Nen until they pay back what they owe.
