In anime, the heroes do not always make the right choice, and if they do make the right choice, the decision can lead to collateral damage. Sometimes, when the hero is stuck between poor options and chooses wrong, the other characters are left to pay the price.
The hero cannot be right all of the time. Furthermore, with all the decisions a hero must make throughout a series, they are bound to get it wrong sometimes, and others have to pick up the pieces.
10 Shoto Was Traumatized By His Own Pro-Hero Father In My Hero Academia
Shoto Todoroki’s father, Enji Todoroki (better known as Endeavor), is a literal hero. He is the Number One Pro Hero. However, he was not so heroic in his domestic life. Rather, he was a villain to his family, especially his wife and Shoto.
Shoto was traumatized by his father, who abused him in trying to make him stronger and who drove his mother to a breakdown. Not only does Shoto continue to pay for Endeavor’s mistake, but his entire family also does, as well. Endeavor is now trying to make amends, but it will take a lot to achieve.
9 In My Hero Academia, Nighteye Died Because Of Deku & Lemillion’s Decisions About Eri
Sir Nighteye was a great hero and the former sidekick to the greatest Pro Hero, All Might. He served as a mentor for both Lemillion (Mirio Togata) and Deku (Izuku Midoriya) as they tried to graduate from UA and make it to Pro Hero status.
Lemillion and Deku came across Eri, a young girl who was seemingly being held hostage by the villain, Overhaul, but they decided to let Overhaul go due to his power level. When they decided to regroup and try again, they had to fight Overhaul in his domain, and Nighteye was killed.
8 Naruto’s Might Guy Pushed Rock Lee Too Far In The Chunin Exams
Might Guy lamented about his decision to push his favorite student, Rock Lee, in his fight against the Sand Ninja, Gaara, during the Chunin Exams. It was a decision that rendered Rock Lee seriously injured and threatened his ability to continue being a ninja.
Rock Lee stood no chance against a jinchuriki like Gaara, but instead of seeing that, Might Guy gave Rock Lee the go-ahead to continue fighting (even after performing the Primary Lotus). He did not step in to stop the fight until Rock Lee’s bones had already been crushed.
7 In Avatar: The Last Airbender, Iroh Was Imprisoned Because Zuko Decided To Work With Azula
Iroh believed in Prince Zuko when no one else would, and after living in Ba Sing Se for a while, he had hope that Zuko was on a virtuous path. Unfortunately, these hopes were dashed when Zuko chose to help Azula and attack Aang and his friends (who Iroh had been protecting at the time).
Zuko betrayed Iroh so he could rejoin his father, the Fire Lord. However, this choice was folly. While Zuko would not be a true hero until after amending this decision to join the Fire Lord, he had done heroic things.
6 XxxHOLIC’s Doumeki Lost His Sight Because Watanuki Was Careless
Series protagonist, Kimihiro Watanuki, makes a huge, but seemingly trivial mistake when he walks through a spider’s web while helping his friend Shizuka Doumeki clean a shrine. In doing this, he disturbs the spider’s home. Doumeki helps take the web off Watanuki, but as a result, the spider directs its ire at Doumeki, causing him to go blind in one eye.
If Watanuki had paid better attention and had more reverence for the spider’s life, this could have been avoided. Of course, that is a tall order, seeing as this moment was so trivial.
5 Baron Zeppeli Died Saving Jonathan Joestar From Tarkus In Phantom Blood
Jonathan Joestar was not completely prepared when he went in to fight Tarkus. In allowing the collar to be placed around his neck, he was at a serious disadvantage, too. Luckily, his mentor, Baron Zeppeli, was around to make up for Jonathan’s lack of planning.
However, Baron Zeppeli did die in this attempt. His last moment was spent sending enough power and energy to Jonathan that the young Joestar could turn the tables on the fight. Baron Zeppeli willingly paid the price, but it likely could have been avoided if Jonathan was as good a tactician as his descendants would be.
4 Biwa’s Father Died Because She Spoke Out In Heike Monogatari
Biwa’s father had just finished telling her that a family being dragged away by the authorities were being punished for speaking out against the powers that be, and what did Biwa do? She audibly exclaimed how the authorities were horrible.
As a result, those agents who had just finished punishing the locals turned their attention to Biwa and threatened to kill her. Biwa’s father stepped in front of her and took the punishment for his child, being cut down in front of Biwa. Of course, Biwa was a child, so one cannot blame her for the authorities’ actions.
3 Setsuko Dies Because Of Seita’s Poor Decisions In Grave of the Fireflies
Seita and Setsuko were both children when they lost their home and their parents in the war. They tried staying with family members, but Seita made them leave when the family members verbally abused them and took advantage of them by taking what little they had left.
The reason Seita decided to leave with Setsuko in tow has been chalked up to pride. As a result of his decision (and subsequent refusal to return to his extended family members’ house), Setsuko starved to death. Later, Seita died as well.
2 Light Let Soichiro Die In Death Note
Light Yagami’s choice to wager everything (including his family and friends’ lives) to continue his crusade against those he considered too evil to live resulted in his father’s death. Soichi Yagami had suspected his beloved son of being involved somehow, but he never realized just how far Light was willing to go.
Light’s biggest mistake was letting the Death Note turn him into the very monster he claimed to hunt. His egotism led to a lot of collateral damage, his father was just one of those hurt by him, and he died as a result.

While Sokka was able to evacuate the village before they could be killed by the oncoming calamity, the village was still washed away. So many people lost their homes due to Katara and Aang helping Jet, even if it was misguided due to Jet’s lies and manipulation.
