The world of anime is populated with all kinds of fighters, many of whom use their bare fists, fancy swords, or even bows and firearms to fight. Many of these fighters are effective under any circumstances, since they bring their weapons or martial arts skills with them everywhere, but not all characters are like that. Some characters need special circumstances to fight effectively.
There are anime heroes and villains alike who can’t just start fighting whenever they like. These characters need some setup first, or they need ideal terrain and circumstances to make the most of their powers. When in their element, these characters are quite powerful, but they might be totally defenseless and vulnerable otherwise.
10 Cioccolata Needs His Enemies To Get Lower (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)
Interestingly enough, a significant percentage of all JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure villains need special circumstances to make the most of their Stands, and they tend to lay traps and ambush the Joestar heroes so they can get the upper hand. One of these circumstance-reliant villains is the wicked doctor Cioccolata.
Cioccolata appeared later in the Golden Wind story arc, and his deadly Green Day Stand can spread noxious mold from one person to another. However, this only works if the victims become physically lower, such as crouching, falling over, or going down some stairs. So, Cioccolata brings along Secco to help create these circumstances on demand.
9 Toph Beifong Needs Earth Or Metal To Bend (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
Most benders in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender need their native element on hand so they can bend it, with Firebenders being the sole exception. Earthbenders need soil or rocks to manipulate in combat, and Toph Beifong, in particular, can also bend impure metals such as iron.
Earthbending is a powerful fighting style, but as expected, an Earthbender with no soil or rocks to bend is totally vulnerable, and not even Toph is exempt. She was once tossed into a jail cell made of wood, for example, and she was helpless. Fortunately, Katara helped her escape.
8 Aaroniero Arurruerie Needs Darkness To Transform (Bleach)
Few Bleach characters rely on specific circumstances to be powerful, since Soul Reapers and Arrancars alike carry their special powers inside their zanpakuto rather than relying on the terrain to fight. Then again, there’s the 9th Espada Aaroniero Arurruerie. He can’t stand sunlight.
Sunlight doesn’t actually damage Aaroniero, but it does block his trickiest abilities, so he avoids the sun whenever possible. In the darkness, he can manifest the bodies and memories of anyone whom he’s eaten, in particular, the fallen Soul Reaper Kaien Shiba. Then, Rukia exposed him to light to obliterate this disguise and see Aaroniero’s true face.
7 Iruma Suzuki Needs To Absorb Mana First (Welcome To Demon School, Iruma-Kun!)
Iruma Suzuki is an isekai hero who did not gain any particular powers or abilities, which sets him apart from the likes of Subaru Natsuki and Rimuru Tempest. He’s practically helpless on his own, but at one point, he got his hands on the Ring of Solomon. That changed everything.
This ring allows Iruma to absorb nearby magic energy and use it, so circumstantially, Iruma can be vastly powerful. The best example was when he absorbed a massive monster’s overwhelming energy in Walter Park and defeated it.
6 Pride Needs Shadows To Fight (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)
Just like Aaroniero in Bleach, the mighty homunculus Pride is sensitive to light and darkness, and he needs the right circumstances to show his true power. Pride is a shadow-based being, meaning he cannot manifest his true form in absolute darkness or intense light. He needs balance.
Pride’s dark tunnel becomes a deathtrap if visitors bring torches or lamps, thus creating shadows for Pride to use. Pride is also quite powerful in the early morning or evening, where light and darkness are mixed. But if his foes use flashbang grenades, for example, Pride is temporarily powerless.
5 Mannish Boy Requires Sleeping Enemies (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)
Mannish Boy is another JoJo’s Stand user who is only powerful when the right circumstances are in place. He also has the distinction of being the youngest Stand user in the anime, and as a baby boy, no one sees him as a threat. That’s fine with him.
Mannish Boy can only use his terrifying Death 13 Stand when his target is asleep, and he will use Death 13 to execute them inside their dreams. He nearly killed both Noriaki Kakyoin and Polnareff this way until the JoJo squad found a way to sneak a Stand in and fight back.
4 Fumikage Tokoyami Needs Darkness (My Hero Academia)
A surprising number of anime characters are sensitive to light and darkness when their powers are concerned, from Aaroniero and Pride to the raven-headed hero Fumikage Tokoyami. Fumikage is a gifted boy whose Dark Shadow Quirk requires darkness itself to realize its potential.
Dark Shadow can function in broad daylight, but its power is very limited, and Fumikage doesn’t like that. Instead, Fumikage likes to fight in the evening, when Dark Shadow is much stronger but still fairly easy to control. In absolute darkness, it’s even stronger, but difficult to control. It’s a balancing act.
3 Aqua Requires Water Or Unholy Opponents To Fight (Konosuba)
The goddess Aqua is widely mocked and criticized for being useless, and her bratty attitude isn’t helping, either. During many quests, there isn’t much Aqua can do aside from complaining, but if the right circumstances come along, Aqua can finally prove why she is a goddess.
Aqua, as per her name, works best with water, and she can purify water to fight her enemies effectively. Aqua is also a holy being who is incredibly potent against unholy enemies such as zombies and reanimated skeletons, and even Kazuma Sato must respect what Aqua can do against these particular enemies.
2 Enmu Needs His Enemies To Sleep (Demon Slayer)
Mannish Boy isn’t the only anime villain who needs his enemies to sleep. The Lower Moon One, Enmu, is a tricky fighter who ambushed Tanjiro’s squad aboard the Mugen Train, and he made sure to put all of his foes to sleep before making his move.
Enmu sent his minions to attack Tanjiro, Kyojuro Rengoku, and the others in their dreams and strike at their cores. Under these circumstances, Enmu is downright unbeatable, but Tanjiro managed to find a way out of it, by taking his own life in his dreams to wake up in reality.
1 Kurapika Kurta Must Face The Phantom Troupe’s Members Or Else (Hunter X Hunter)
Most of the Nen fighters in Hunter X Hunter are powerful under any circumstances, such as the electric assassin Killa Zoldyck or the creepy jester Hisoka Morrow. Nen is a tricky thing, though, and a Nen user can use special conditions and terms to augment their Nen powers at a cost.
Kurapika Kurta is determined to get revenge on the Phantom Troupe, so he modified his powerful Nen abilities accordingly. He vowed that he should only use his Nen abilities against members of the Phantom Troupe and no one else, and he will pay with his life if he violates those terms. And it paid off fairly well during the Yorknew City story arc.
