Heroes are conventionally seen as being saviors, fueled by willpower and immense talent in order to keep everybody safe. However, The Rising of the Shield Hero manages to shine a different light on what it means to be a hero, albeit not as extreme as the likes of The Boys.
In the Shield Hero anime, Naofumi is tasked with being this world’s titular hero after being Isekai’d from his own world, but he is not the only one. Other people were chosen to become the Spear, Sword, and Bow Heroes. Namely, Motoyasu, Ren, and Itsuki, respectively. These heroes are largely useless in the fights against the waves and are generally depicted as being easily unlikable. While not being as outwardly unlikable as the likes of Motoyasu, the Bow Hero Itsuki makes poor and questionable decisions hardly befitting of a hero. There are plenty of bow-users in anime that would arguably be a better fit to be the Bow Hero.
10 Archer Would Simply Overpower The Waves (Fate/Stay Night)
The Fate series can sometimes prove to be confusing for new viewers looking to try out the anime in terms of the correct order to watch everything. However, one aspect that can’t be disputed is the incredible strength and talent on display with many of the characters.
Archer from Fate/stay night is an example of this, with his name aptly surmising his main strength, archery. Unlike several other anime archers, the extent of his strength and power is astronomical, with him able to shoot from incredible distances with serious force. If the Bow Hero were to be a proficient bow and arrow-user with a no-nonsense attitude in doing what had to be done, then Archer would fit the bill perfectly.
9 Kagome Higarashi Would Put Every Ounce Of Her Being Into Protecting The People (Inuyasha)
Inuyasha‘s Kagome Higarashi is a prime example of a character with a kind and pure heart, yet who will stop at nothing while fighting in the name of justice. Due to the fact that Kagome is a reincarnation of a feudal era miko in Kikyo, it takes her a while to grow into and perfect her fighting capabilities, with her favoring the bow and arrow, as Kikyo did before her.
Kagome gradually learns how to incorporate her spiritual powers into her archery, with her slowly but surely becoming more proficient and deadly with the bow and arrow. Kagome would not be the deadliest Bow Hero possible when compared to other anime archers. However, her moral compass and desire to fight for justice would be a formidable asset when rallying the people against the waves.
8 Yoichi Would Bring A Certain Underdog Flavor To His Role As Bow Hero (Seraph of the End)
Weapons and their wielders have a unique relationship in Seraph of the End, with the wielder having to earn and agree on a contract with a demon, before being able to utilize their power. The process is difficult and dangerous, but every character has their own driving force pushing them through and enabling them to take control of their demon.
Towards the beginning of the series, Yoichi Saotome was seen as naïve and too kind-hearted to be considered a cursed gear user. Yoichi nearly succumbed to his demon in the contract ceremony, but he persevered and snapped out of it. He learned how to get the best out of being a ranged attacker with his cursed bow, gradually becoming a formidable asset to have in battle, all while keeping his core of being a kind person fighting for justice.
7 Farangis Would Pursue A Just Cause With All Her Might (The Heroic Legend Of Arslan)
The Heroic Legend Of Arslan follows the titular character as a fleeing prince forced away from his home. Arslan builds up a group of loyal and talented individuals to help him one day return home and take what was rightfully his before all the betrayal and deceit.
Two of the additions to the group are Farangis, a priestess, and Gieve, a traveling musician, and they are both proven to be exceptional archers. Both have exceptional skill with the bow, with their talents being able to easily formulate and participate in any plan that the master strategist Narsus may formulate. While Gieve’s motives are often questionable, Farangis’s unwavering loyalty and servitude would make her a reliable Bow Hero.
6 As Long As The Waves Continue, Sinon Would Continue To Protect Those She Cares About (Sword Art Online)
Sword Art Online has introduced multiple characters over the years that find joy and obsession in the world of virtual reality, with them able to get away from the trials and trauma of real life. Few characters are as good a representation of this as Shino Asada, known in-game as Sinon.
Introduced in the Gun Gale Online arc of Sword Art Online II, Sinon accompanies Kirito with her exceptional sniper skills and eventually is added to Kirito’s close group of friends. When playing any game outside of Gun Gale Online, Sinon assumes the role of archer, a logical progression that utilizes her accuracy and prowess from a distance. Sinon fights fiercely for those that deserve her loyalty and would be a valuable asset to have when fending off the waves of enemies.
5 Ashitaka Would Be A Hero To Rally Behind (Princess Mononoke)
Released in 1997, Princess Mononoke is still considered by many to be one of the best Studio Ghibli movies, from its captivating action and story to the interesting characters. One such character is Prince Ashitaka, who becomes cursed but learns to utilize it and become stronger.
His determination to cure his curse and save everybody is a testament to his will and would certainly translate well to becoming the Bow Hero in The Rising Of The Shield Hero. Ashitaka has a kind heart and would prefer there to be no bloodshed, but he will always do what has to be done. He is a good archer regardless, but with possession from the curse, it makes him a truly terrifying bowman.
4 Sailor Mars Would Direct her Temper At The Waves (Sailor Moon)
One of the other Sailor Soldiers that wasn’t the titular Sailor Moon, Sailor Mars, whose everyday name was Rei Hino, was a hot-headed individual who reflected this in her fighting. Rei had a great affinity with fire, often unleashing unrelenting and unpredictable flames on her opponents.
Sailor Mars also showcased her knack for archery with her “Mars Flame Sniper” attack, which showed off her hot temper, as well as her skill with the bow and arrow. Despite her relatively short fuse, Rei’s loyalty was rarely brought into question despite regularly teasing and questioning those she cared about. She would survive well in the realms of The Rising of the Shield Hero and would ultimately unleash her chaos on the waves, not to mention those who wronged her or her friends.
3 Uryu Ishida’s Strong Sense Of Justice Would Push Towards Saving Those In Danger (Bleach)
Archers don’t always have to be used by wielders of physical bows and arrows. Several anime characters are known for fabricating weapons from another matter, with magic being the most common source.
In the case of Bleach‘s Uryu Ishida, he manipulates and utilizes energy, as is expected of a Quincy. His power and precision grow throughout the series and make him a formidable fighter and archer. Uryu also possesses a strong sense of justice, with him especially vowing to bring down justice on those who abuse or treat women badly. This virtue and his battling prowess would certainly make him a candidate to be the Bow Hero.
2 Ukyo Saionji Would Prefer Not To Engage In Bloodshed But Would Do Whatever It Takes For Peace (Dr. Stone)
In Dr. Stone, Ukyo Saionji was one of the characters to be revived or de-petrified by Tsukasa Shishio. Ukyo was initially a part of Tsukasa’s empire, believing it was the only way to ensure survival. However, his consistently pacifistic nature eventually saw him side with Senku, thinking it to be the best decision to stop all of the bloodshed.
Ukyo was a skilled archer but often tried to use his skills to trap or intimidate rather than to kill, but if pushed, he would go against his morals of pacifism in the name of survival. Fighting in the realms of Shield Hero against the waves would bring out Ukyo’s survival instinct, and he would likely not hesitate when fighting the hordes of monsters.
1 Tigrevurmud Vorn Would Use His Gift For Good (Lord Marksman & Vanadis)
Lord Marksman & Vanadis may not be one of the most known or revered anime, but for those looking for a unique twist on a war series with a talented archer as a protagonist, it definitely ticks those boxes. Tigrevermud Vorn ends up working for the enemy as a prisoner of war but is still driven by his love for his own people.
Tigre is loved and respected by the masses, and he returns this on the battlefield with exemplary archery skills, fighting for honor and justice. Anyone who fights tooth and nail for the people is more than worthy of being the Bow Hero.
